Toyota to dealers: Stop selling Camry, other best-sellers; heated seats a problem

by Nathan Bomey of www.freep.com

Toyota told dealers in the U.S. and Canada to stop selling six of its best-selling models — including the nation’s best-selling car, the Camry — after discovering their heated seats don’t meet U.S. flammability standards.

The Japanese automaker didn’t issue a recall and said there had been no injuries or fires, but it did say it had notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration about the issue. A South Korean agency reportedly discovered the problem during testing.

Toyota ordered dealers to stop selling Avalon, Avalon Hybrid, Camry, Camry Hybrid, Corolla, Sienna, Tacoma and Tundra models equipped with heated seats. Most of the vehicles are made in the U.S.

The Camry was the best-selling car in the U.S. last year, while the Corolla was the fifth-best.

The automaker said about 36,000 vehicles on dealer lots, or about 13% of current inventory, must get new seat fabric before they can be sold. An undetermined number of vehicles en route from factories to showrooms are also affected.

“All those vehicles will be captured, all of them will be fitted with the new seat-heater assembly so they will then be able to be sold,” Toyota spokesman John Hanson said in an interview. “We’re actually building the new units right now. Basically it’s the seat heater with a different cloth pad that does meet (regulations) for burn rate.”

Hanson said it was too early to say how long it would take for dealers to install the new material.

That means Toyota’s most popular vehicles are not available for purchase for the foreseeable future, which could dent the automaker’s early February sales.

“It affects the most important cars from their lineup, and we’re in the grips of a lot of cold weather right now, so the timing is about as bad as it could be,” said Karl Brauer, a Kelley Blue Book analyst. “You know people who are out buying a Camry right now are more likely than ever to want one with heated seats.”

Hanson said Toyota asked NHTSA to declare the issue “inconsequential as it relates to vehicle safety,” which would make a recall unnecessary. He said the number of vehicles that have been already sold with the noncompliant seats was not immediately available.

According to Kelley Blue Book data, about 26% of 2013 and 2014 Toyota vehicles have heated seats. The issue affects 2014 models of the Corolla and Tundra, and 2013 and 2014 models for the other models.
The NHTSA has the authority to order a recall of models that have already been sold.

“Can you imagine if there’s got to be a recall?” Brauer said. “This is not a sensor or an airbag.”

Next-gen Nissan GT-R rendered with Sport Sedan concept influences

Confirmed with a hybrid setup

The next generation of the Nissan GT-R has been rendered with influences taken from the Sport Sedan concept shown earlier this month at NAIAS in Detroit.

When the Sport Sedan concept was exhibited at the North American International Auto Show many people believed it's a preview for the next-gen Maxima, but let's not exclude the possibility some of the styling cues will be implemented in the new GT-R set most likely for a 2016 arrival.

It should be noted that Nissan Executive Vice President Andy Palmer declared about two weeks ago the next generation GT-R will adopt a "brutal appearance." More importantly, he also said the supercar will feature a hybrid powertrain and as we reported last August the company has registered the "R-Hybrid" moniker.

Ad of the Day: Volkswagen Gets Its Wings in 2014 Super Bowl Commercial

by David Gianatasio of www.adweek.com

Volkswagen of America's minute-long 2014 Super Bowl spot from ad agency Argonaut, released online this morning, sports a pretty lofty concept: Every time a VW vehicle hits 100,000 miles, a German engineer gets his wings. Indeed, we see feathered appendages sprout from engineers' backs, and some of the guys float around a VW factory like angels in lab coats. The "wings envy" scene in the men's room is a cute touch.
“We are thrilled with this year's creative, which highlights the enthusiasm around our brand and our vehicles' German engineering in a humorous spot that embodies the Volkswagen spirit," says Vinay Shahani, VW's vp of marketing. The automaker claims to have the most cars on the road with over 100,000 miles.
VW believes the "Wings" concept has legs, as the engineers will appear in additional game-day videos across VW's social channels and offer live responses to on-field developments. They will also lead an "Internet-ifier 5000" YouTube homepage takeover on Feb. 3, the day after the game, remixing the "Wings" commercial with cat and baby memes from around the Web.
The spot's tone, broadly farcical but not especially outrageous, is nothing like VW's noisy "Algorithm" teaser, which lampooned Super Bowl ads by showing the engineers using science to design the "ultimate" big-game spot crammed with puppies, bikinis, babies, dinosaurs, pirates, Carmen Electra and Abraham Lincoln (none of which had wings).
I wonder if VW will take some heat for showing mainly white, male, middle-aged engineers? The most prominent woman in the factory slaps a dude's face because she thinks he's trying to get less than angelic with her in an elevator. Guess he could've used a wingman.
"Wings," which premiered Tuesday morning on NBC's Today show, marks the client's fifth consecutive Super Bowl appearance. VW enjoyed its greatest game-day success with 2011's "The Force," a charming Star Wars-themed spot from Deutsch LA. I doubt "Wings" will soar to such iconic heights, but its silly humor flies well enough to make the ad memorable.

SuperBowl 2014 Commercial: KIA N900 "The Truth" Matrix Morpheus Commercial

by Erik Oster of www.mediabistro.com

Yesterday, we brought you news of David&Goliath’s teaser for their big game spot, “The Truth,” promoting the all-new 2015 K900, Kia’s first-ever luxury car. Today, David&Goliath and Kia revealed the extended, 90 second version of their Super Bowl ad, designed to “dispel the notion that tradition and history are what makes a luxury sedan,” according to Michael Sprague, executive vice president of marketing & communications, KMA.

“The Truth” features Laurence Fishburne reprising his role as Morpheus from The Matrix. Morpheus offers a couple waiting for the valet outside a restaurant a choice: “Take the blue key, you go back to the luxury you know. Take the red key, and you’ll never look at luxury the same again.” (Spoiler alert: They take the red key.)  Fishburne repeats the word “luxury” ad nauseum during the spot’s first 30 seconds or so, really hammering home that Kia is now offering a luxury vehicle. The spot manages to contain a lot of the Matrix references you’d expect, like a bending spoon and an explosion filled action sequence. But at the same time, “The Truth,” via Fishburne, manages at least one big surprise.

The 60 second version of “The Truth” will debut during the third quarter of the Super Bowl this Sunday, Feb. 2, launching the Kia’s campaign for the 2015 K900 in earnest, and marking Kia’s fifth consecutive year advertising in the big game. You can expect more Matrix-themed advertising from David&Goliath and Kia. Before and after the Super Bowl, David&Goliath’s integrated campaign “will incorporate TV, cinema, digital, print, experiential, social media and CRM components, all drawing heavily on imagery and ideas from the films.” Credits after the jump.

Disney's 'Muppets Most Wanted' and Terry Crews Take Toyota on a Super Bowl Joyride

2014 Highlander Spot Highlights Muppets' Mission to 'Unborify' Crews on Game Day

Toyota, Disney Collaboration Celebrates All-New Toyota Highlander and All-New "Muppets Most Wanted" Film, In Theaters March 21, 2014

January 21, 2014
TORRANCE, Calif. (Jan. 21, 2014) –The Muppets gang is in for a wild ride when they join forces with Toyota this year, blending Toyota's exciting 'Let's Go Places' spirit with Muppets mayhem. The collaboration celebrates the upcoming Toyota Highlander launch and the Muppets' all-new big-screen adventure "Muppets Most Wanted," in theaters March 21, 2014.

Disney's Muppets will hit the road with Terry Crews, star of the Golden Globe®-winning FOX series "Brooklyn Nine-Nine," in Toyota's new commercial for the all-new 2014 Toyota Highlander. The 60-second spot, entitled "Joyride," will make its broadcast debut during Super Bowl XLVIII on Sunday, February 2.

"Our game-day spot shows how Toyota Highlander puts the 'fun' in function," said Jack Hollis, vice president of Toyota Division Marketing at Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. "Toyota vehicles are built to last and can even endure the most boisterous Muppets, a former NFL player as well as a center console full of chickens."

With their over-the-top personalities, the Muppets teach Crews' character a thing or two about "unborifying" his lifestyle as they "borrow" his sweet ride, the Toyota Highlander. The spot features humorous hijinks, dancing and surprises-and no Muppet caper would be complete without an original song. Viewers will see that with seating for up to eight human passengers or more than a dozen Muppets, the all-new Toyota Highlander has plenty of room for everything-everything except boring.

"We're always game for a wild ride," said Kermit the Frog, who makes a special appearance in the campaign, "as long as Animal's not driving. He doesn't quite get the whole concept of brakes."

Crews, who played six years in the NFL as a defensive end/linebacker, is known for his roles and appearances on television shows such as "Arrested Development" and "The Newsroom," and films "The Expendables" franchise, "Bridesmaids" and "The Longest Yard."

"It's truly an honor to be a part of this wild ride with Toyota and the Muppets," said Crews. "The Toyota Highlander is the perfect vehicle to teach my character how to loosen up and have some fun. Be prepared for some laughs on game day."

In addition to the commercial, the Muppets gang will provide real-time updates as they travel to the big game in their Toyota Highlander on February 2. Fans and customers are invited to chat live with the Muppets on game day by tweeting @Toyota or using #NoRoomForBoring.

The broadcast spot and social media activities were developed in partnership with Saatchi & Saatchi LA, Conill and 360i. "Joyride" will air during the second quarter of the game. For a preview of the commercial, please visit: http://www.youtube.com/v/jjmwdLM478A .

Beyond the Super Bowl, the Toyota and Disney collaboration will see the Highlander co-starring with Muppets stars from "Muppets Most Wanted" in an advertising campaign showcasing the vehicle's features, functionality and "unboring" personality. Starring Ricky Gervais, Ty Burrell and Tina Fey, the film takes the entire Muppets gang on a global tour where they find themselves unwittingly entangled in an international crime caper.

"We all grew up with Kermit and the Muppets, and that makes Toyota's collaboration with Disney very special for us," said Hollis. "The two brands share a focus on delighting guests, and this allows us to take them along on a fun ride."

"We're excited to work with Toyota for the first time," said Don Gross, vice president, promotions The Walt Disney Studios. "The Muppets' classic mix of high energy and heart matches perfectly with Toyota's spirit of adventure, and Kermit, Gonzo and the whole gang look forward to many zany road trips."

Honda releases 3D data of its concept models for 3D printing

http://www.honda-3d.com/

Honda believes great inventions can spring from seemingly crazy ideas. To share the fun with everyone, Honda Motor Co., Ltd. released 3D data for exterior designs of concept models Honda has introduced in the past, so you can download the designs, reimagine them according to your own personal vision, and share them with the world.

The data is offered based on version 4.0 of Creative Commons licenses which allows you to redistribute or remix the works within the licensing conditions. You can easily download the data from the website "Honda 3D Design Archives," and replicate them using a household 3D printer.

Honda is currently promoting a new global branding project under which Honda's unique approaches and thoughts toward the "art of manufacturing" appeal to a wide range of people. Following the release of a Honda brand commercial film titled "Super ultra daydreams," which debuted at the start of Honda's press conference at the Tokyo Motor Show last year, the release of the 3D data through the "Honda 3D Design Archives" will be the second initiative under this project.

By offering data of its concept models, Honda is hoping to see the emergence of outstanding future automobile designers and engineers from the users who are inspired by this project.

MotorTrend: 2015 Acura TLX Caught Testing Weeks After Detroit Debut

Here is the prototype.

By Erick Ayapana of www.motortrend.com

The upcoming 2015 Acura TLX has been spotted in the wild. Our very own Associate Editor Rory Jurnecka caught the Acura during his morning commute to Motor Trend headquarters and the tester’s relatively minimal amounts of camouflage is a good indication that the TLX prototype's overall styling, unveiled at the 2014 Detroit auto show, will likely carryover to the production version.

Out back, the most noticeable change takes place at the lower bumper. The show car was sporting a fair amount of chrome and bold sculpting, but the production version appear to have a more toned-down look with a pair of red reflectors at the lower edge and simpler lines. The taillights appear to carryover, but the upper edge of the trunk lid doesn’t appear to be as aggressive as the show car’s. And unlike the TSX and TL, the TLX will sport concealed exhaust tips.

From the side, the rocker panel treatment is a bit more subdued, though the black tapes appears to be covering the same character lines found on the show car. Not surprisingly, the TLX prototype’s fancy side view mirrors and their “moving glow” light treatment give way to more conventional units. Acura heavily masked the C-pillar and rear quarter window, so we’ll have to wait a bit longer to see how that portion of the sedan turns out. One shot of the front fender reveals what appear to be Acura’s Jewel Eye LED headlights and fairly aggressive looking air dams.

The 2015 TLX is slated to arrive in showrooms by mid-2014 and will be offered with a new 2.4-liter I-4 or a 3.5-liter V-6. The TLX will also feature new transmissions, as well the latest version of Acura’s Super Handling All-Wheel drive system (available for the V-6 model)

Ayrton Senna’s Honda NSX pictures

If there is one thing that will boost the value of a classic car, it is 'provenance' - a provable history of ownership by somebody famous.

And this 1992 Honda NSX has provenance in spades; once owned by legendary three times Formula One world champion Ayrton Senna, it will go under the hammer at Silverstone Auctions' Race Retro & Classic Car Sale on 22 and 23 February.

The Honda was originally bought by Antonio Carlos de Almeida Braga, Senna's manager, mentor and close personal friend, for the Brazilian to use when he visited the Braga family home in Portugal - and Braga made sure that it was exactly the same specification (plain black, with black leather interior and manual gearbox) as the NSX Senna drove at home in Brazil.

NOBODY WAS ALLOWED TO TOUCH IT

After Senna's tragic death at Imola in 1994, the car just stood in the garage at Braga's home. He wouldn't let anybody touch it and it hadn't been driven for two years when Braga finally sold it, to an investor who kept it only a short time before selling it on to the current owner in 1997. Even now it has only 50 820km on its odometer.

Auctioneer Nick Whale said: "Very rarely does a car with such pedigree and provenance come on the market, especially with such a personal link to arguably the greatest Formula one driver of all time."

MULTIPLE ANNIVERSARIES

This year sees the 20th anniversary of Senna's death, while next year will be the 25th anniversary of this model. Senna was also personally involved in the development of the NSX because at that time Honda was supplying engines to the McLaren F1 team, a partnership which is set to resume again for the 2015 season.

Given its superb original condition and, of course, its provenance, Whale expects it to fetch £75 000 - £85 000 (R1.4 - R1.55 million).

Indonesia – Honda Mobilio presentation video released

by Sharawan Raja of www.indianautosblog.com

Honda Prospect Motor (Honda Indonesia) has compiled a video that briefs on the design, technology and features of the Honda Mobilio which launched in the archipelago last week. The video is in Indonesian, but there’s nothing one can’t understand of the light MPV watching the visuals.

Features explained in the video include tilt steering, audio system with CD, Aux and USB ports, double blower aircon, one touch tumble seat, Eco Meter, 1.5L i-VTEC engine matched to a CVT gearbox, 5.2m turning radius, electric power steering, dual SRS airbag, ABS+EBD, and an accessory pack

The first 160 customers of the Honda Mobilio were given the keys on Saturday in an event in Jakarta.
The Mobilio for India will be revealed at the 2014 Auto Expo (starts on Feb 5 in Greater Noida) and the important change for the local market is the addition of a 1.5L EarthDreams diesel engine that achieves record fuel efficiency on the Amaze and new City. This engine would pair to the 5-speed manual transmission, while the 6-speed MT is also worth considering an MPV is a highway/long-distance vehicle in India. Whether Honda India will offer the CVT option for the petrol Mobilio is not confirmed.

The Indonesian Mobilio comes in three variants – S, E, and E-Prestige – with prices starting at 159,500 rupiah (8.19 lakh rupees).

Review and photos by Peter Bleakney

Orlando, Florida – You sure can’t accuse Honda of resting on its laurels when it comes to the Civic.

Less than a year after launching the ninth generation of its compact sedan in the fall of 2011, Honda hauled her back into the workshop to make a number of significant improvements. Call it planned evolution or an emergency makeover (most would pick the latter), the automaker was quick to address criticisms leveled at the 2012 Civic pertaining to its subpar interior quality, uninspired handling and somewhat dull styling.
And so the 2013 Civic sedan got a classier snout and derriere, while both sedan and coupe saw suspension upgrades, better plastics, colour-matching interior bits and a few new features.
Honda could have left it there. After all, this North American–only Civic does very well in the US, and up here in Canada it is currently celebrating its 16th year as our county’s top-selling passenger vehicle.

But this is a super tough segment. The cars might be small, but they don’t play nice. The stylin’ Hyundai Elantra has been nipping at Civic’s heels in the sales race here for the past three years, and with all-new players like the impressive 2014 Toyota Corolla and 2014 Mazda3 on board, Honda once again sees fit to upgrade the Civic.

The mantra for 2014 is more power, more connectivity, better fuel economy, and in the case of the Coupe variants we drove in Florida, a bump from 15-inch to 16-inch rolling stock, suspension mods to improve body control and exterior styling tweaks.

But first we’ll look at the changes that affect both 2014 Civic Sedan and Coupe.

A freer-flowing exhaust system has netted three more ponies and one more torque – the 1.8L VTEC four now makes 143 hp at 6,500 rpm and 129 lb-ft at 4,300 rpm.

The biggest news for 2014 is a Honda-developed CVT (continuously variable transmission) that replaces the old five-speed auto. Coupe models get paddle shifters – the sedans don’t. While unavailable on the base DX sedan (a five-speed manual is the only transmission), the CVT is a $1,300 option on the LX and EX versions of both sedan and coupe, and standard on the top-trim Touring sedan and EX-L coupe.

The CVT is lighter than the outgoing auto and widens the ratio range by 22 percent. This bodes well for fuel economy. Strangely, Honda is only claiming economy gains in the city cycle (consumption drops from 7.1 to 6.7 L/100 km) while highway mileage remains at 5.0 L/100 km.

On the connectivity front, both the EX sedan and EX coupe get a new touchscreen interface dubbed Display Audio. Move up to the Touring sedan, Hybrid sedan, EX-L coupe or either Si performance variants and we get Display Audio with Navi.

A seven-inch capacitive touchscreen with slide, flick, pinch and multi-tap functions lives at the top of the centre stack. For those into connectivity it’s a boon. If you care about ergonomics, well…

The good old-fashioned volume knob, which most manufacturers still appear to deem essential no matter what, is AWOL here. So you’ll be using the steering wheel controls. Otherwise, your eyes must leave the road and follow the fingertip as it tries to hone in on the screen’s digital rendering of a slider. From which imprecise adjustments are yours for the poking.
First Drive: 2014 Honda Civic first drivesFirst Drive: 2014 Honda Civic first drivesFirst Drive: 2014 Honda Civic first drives
At least the radio preset icons are pretty easy to hit, but it does take a fair amount of dicking around with submenus to find said stations in the first place. So once again, basic ergonomics are sacrificed on the altar of connectivity.

That said, Display Audio delivers most of the goods for those who live through a smart phone and need all that in a car. There is USB, HDMI connectivity and Bluetooth streaming. Various apps are coming online. Currently Aha, Honda Link (like GM’s OnStar) and a $59 navigation app if you just have the basic system sans built-in navigation. iPhone users can also chat with Siri. When the car is stationary, YouTube streaming is available.

No text-to-voice capability though.

Display Audio with Navi–equipped cars get a three-mode rear-view camera (normal, wide and top down).
On EX trim and higher, Honda’s LaneWatch, first seen on the 2013 Accord, presents a clever solution for lessening the chance of an “oops” with objects in your right-side blind spot. Turn on the right turn signal and a rear-facing camera on the wing mirror shoots up a clear image on the centre display. Especially good for checking for cyclists coming up on the inside when driving in the city.

Other interior changes include new seat fabrics and a black lower dash panel replacing the gray on some trims.

Overall, the Civic’s cabin looks good. Materials are of a high quality and you can’t argue with the functionality of the two-tiered dash with its super bright displays. Some of my colleagues here at Autos.ca find it all a bit garish, but I’m all for unimpeded delivery of information.

I spent all my drive time on this event in a 2014 Civic Coupe EX with CVT. It sported the newly available Modern Steel Metallic paint.
First Drive: 2014 Honda Civic first drivesFirst Drive: 2014 Honda Civic first drivesFirst Drive: 2014 Honda Civic first drivesFirst Drive: 2014 Honda Civic first drives
In a nutshell, it drives like a Civic. That is to say, nimble, buttoned down, solid and completely inoffensive – a winning formula that is not to be messed with.

The seats are good and the leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel is a quality piece. At highway speeds the Civic Coupe is quiet and composed with fine tracking. The tach shows a relaxed 2,200 rpm at 120 km/h.

And what about this new CVT? As we established with the 2013 Accord sedan that featured Honda’s first stab at a continuously variable transmission, these guys have a good handle on this technology.
First Drive: 2014 Honda Civic first drives
First Drive: 2014 Honda Civic first drives
Okay, when you really mat the throttle for highway merging the Civic’s modestly powered inline-four drones away while the car plays catch-up, but under most driving conditions you’d be hard pressed to know it was a CVT.

With the console shifter in D, a tug on either paddle calls up a temporary shift. Pull the shifter back to the S position and seven “virtual” gears are at your disposal. It’s pretty much full manual here, and this feature made the nimble coupe considerably more enjoyable on some of the winding back roads we encountered.

Not having a 2013 pre-suspension upgrade Coupe there for comparison, I can’t really comment on these “sportier” chassis changes. But I will say this. The 2014 Coupe shows a fine blend of body control and ride compliance. It glided over some of the more rough sections of pavement with impressive refinement.
Tempering the fun is somewhat vague steering. You’re not getting a real good sense of what’s happening down front.

After my drive, I jumped into a 2014 Mazda3 the Honda folks had kindly (bravely?) supplied for comparison. The Mazda’s steering is much better and the car feels more alert on the road, but the cabin looks blah and the central gauge cluster is small and dim compared to the Honda’s colourful digital array.

While the 2014 Civic Sedan and Coupe are on sale now, devotees of the hot Si cars will have to wait for the refreshed 2014s. The Si Coupe arrives March 12 and the Si Sedan right behind on April Fools’ Day.

A refined exhaust system for the Si’s 2.4L four sees power and torque jump four points respectively to 205 hp at 7,000 rpm and 174 lb-ft at 4,400 rpm. As before, only a close ratio six-speed manual is offered. Both Coupe and Sedan now ride on 18-inch alloys (up from 17s) and come fully equipped with all the new tech toys. There are now colour-keyed seat inserts to match the exterior hue.

The Si’s suspension has been tweaked to increase the front bump motion stiffness by 4 percent and rear roll stiffness by 42 percent. What does that mean to you and me? We’ll find out in a couple of months, but on paper it looks as though they’ve dialed out some understeer, which is always a good thing in a performance car.

Honda has juiced up the Si Coupe’s visuals with a new “floating” rear spoiler, rear diffuser and a more aggressive front clip.

Pricing for the Si cars is up by about by $400 to $26,665, but Honda tells us there’s $1,400 in added value over last year’s models.

The 2014 Civic LX sedan, which accounts for just over fifty percent of Civic sedan sales sees a marginal price increase of  $195 to $18,440.

The Coupe commands a $400 premium over the Sedan in all but the Si variant.

So here we are at the top of 2014 with the Civic still king of the Canadian compacts. And these modest but meaningful mods can only help the Civic’s case. But are they enough to hold off the ascending Elantra? And what about the mercurial Mazda3? Can the competent Corolla come from behind and cut these mothers down?

Tune in this time next year. My money’s on the Honda.
