'Baby NSX' could emerge as a cheaper, less powerful Honda coupe to slot below Acura NSX

New information from inside Honda indicates its all-new 'baby NSX', which was approved for production in mid-2014, will be based on the same platform as the new NSX but fitted with a less expensive and less expensive powertrain.

As we reported in April, Honda's plans for a three-model mid-engined sports car family, include a more powerful 'S1000' export version of the mid-engined S660 mini-roadstercar at the bottom and the new NSX hybrid supercar flagship at the top.

In between, apart from a successor for the CR-Z hybrid due by 2018, Honda is also plotting a radical replacement for the S2000 roadster, to slot neatly into the middle of its mid-engined two-door line-up.

In the last month however, baby NSX news has heated up significantly following the appearance of a patent drawing of the car, which according to a source close to Honda has “some merit.”

As you can see from our artist’s rendering, which is based on the patent drawing of the futuristic mid-size, mid-engined coupe, the proportions are very similar to that of the NSX.

In fact, when a similar image of the NSX is laid over that of the baby NSX, their proportions, wheelbases and powerplant positioning appear to be almost identical.

Another lesson from the apparently official rendering is that the baby NSX is a lot further along its development pathway than previously understood.

Indeed, our source has confirmed the car's exterior is “for all intents and purposes, completed" and that – given its main market will be the US -- the all-new coupe could make its global debut as early as Los Angeles motor show or the Detroit show in January.

The design and timing news backs our previous report that the baby NSX project has been driven largely by North American Honda dealers, who will not have access to the NSX because it will be sold in the US as an Acura.

While Honda's US luxury brand will have an all-new halo model in the NSX, US Honda dealers want some of the sports car action too.

We understand Honda has obliged by employing an almost identical platform to the NSX, dropping in a turbocharged 2.0-litre hybrid unit and fitting an electronic SH-AWD (Super Handling – AWD) system with all-wheel steer, thus fast-tracking the development of a cheaper sports car that was also lighter and therefore not much slower.

As for where Honda will build the baby NSX, our source says the company has two choices – alongside the NSX in the US or on the world’s only dedicated mid-engined vehicle production line in Yokkaichi near Suzuka, where the S660, Vamos and Acty mini-cars are made.

“It’s not impossible to build a baby NSX in Yokkaichi, but we are close to capacity here now and would need to extensively retool to assemble such a coupe," said one engineer.

Therefore it's almost certain the born-again S2000 will be produced in North America, where it should emerge within six months.

Whether it comes to Australia — where the NSX itself, badged as a Honda, is due on sale by the end of next year — is anyone's guess.

With the official debut of Honda’s redesigned Civic just a few months away, the latest spy shots show the 10th-generation model will come with luxury features normally reserved for fancy German sedans, not practical Japanese family cars.

Prototypes caught during hot-weather testing look to offer features like front and rear heated leather seats, and back up Honda’s promise that the Civic would offer its LaneWatch camera system for passenger-side visibility, and at least a few elements of Honda Sensing -- a suite of semi-autonomous safety features like lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and pre-collision braking.

The redesigned interior also gets a simplified center console that sheds the current two-level display on the dashboard.

The spy shots also indicate the exterior of the new Civic -- scheduled to go on sale later this fall -- will also come with some high-zoot gear. Think LED headlights (similar to the recent Accord refresh and the Civic concept that debuted earlier this year), dual-exhaust on some models, and a sporty, fastback profile.

We’ve seen these camouflaged prototypes ourselves on the roads around Honda’s Torrance headquarters and the new Civic looks noticeably larger than its predecessor. It also loses the current model’s cab-forward look for a more refined, graceful silhouette and longer hood.

Honda has made it clear it wants this 2016 Civic to amp up the sportiness, and has promised some versions will come with a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and a six-speed manual transmission.

The Civic will also be the first model from Honda to ride on its new modular platform, one that will eventually underpin the next-generation Accord and CR-V.

Honda has also promised a coupe will follow this sedan, and then a sportier Si model, a five-door hatchback, and -- cue high-fives from tuners -- the much-revered Type R hatchback that’s long been forbidden fruit in the U.S. market.

The production Civic sedan is expected to debut in August or September.

Honda Introduces the Highest Tech Accord Yet in High Tech’s U.S. Hub—Silicon Valley

  • Upgraded 2016 Accord features one of the first applications of both Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ in a volume-produced vehicle
  • More dynamic styling, including first 19-inch wheels on Accord
  • Honda Sensing™ safety and driver-assistive tech available on all trims
  • New 7-inch Display Audio touchscreen interface
Honda introduced a refreshed 2016 Accord loaded with advanced technology in Silicon Valley today, the first time the company has launched a new vehicle in the U.S. tech hub. Coming to market in August, the 2016 Accord will be the first Honda model and among the first high-volume cars in the marketplace to feature both Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™. These and other major upgrades to technology and features make it the most high-tech Accord ever.

The 2016 Accord Sedan and Coupe receive dynamic new styling, a new Display Audio touchscreen interface, and Honda Sensing™, the most comprehensive suite of safety and driver-assistive technologies in the midsize car class. The 2016 Accord also adds HD Radio®, heated rear seats, front and rear parking sensors, and a number of other new features and technology to be revealed in coming weeks. Details on the Accord Hybrid will be announced at a later date.

"Where else to introduce the most technologically advanced midsize sedan, the 2016 Accord, than in Silicon Valley," said John Mendel, executive vice president of the Automobile Division, American Honda Motor Co., Inc. "Customers want their vehicles to be more intelligently integrated with their smartphone-powered lives, and we are committed to delivering that experience starting with Accord, retail car buyers' most popular vehicle the past two years."

Exterior and Interior design
The 2016 Accord gets a major facelift with sportier, more sophisticated styling, front and rear. In front is a more sharply creased and intricately structured bumper fascia with outside edges that tuck into intake-like meshed areas that house new LED fog lights (Sport trim and above). A new aluminum hood features sharper character lines that meet up with a brighter, more expressive front grille. In the rear, the Accord gets restyled LED taillights and a similarly aggressive rear bumper fascia redesign.

While all models feature restyled wheels, the Accord Sedan (Sport and Touring trim) and Coupe (Touring, new for Coupe) get new, larger 19-inch wheels and tires. The Touring sedan also gets a new rear deck spoiler. All models, Coupe and Sedan, feature the expanded use of LED lighting – LED taillights for all models, LED headlights for the new Touring Coupe, and LED daytime running lights (DRLs) for Sport and above trims.

Honda Sensing™
All 2016 Accords also can now be equipped with Honda Sensing™, among the most comprehensive suite of advanced safety and driver-assistive technologies in the class. Honda Sensing includes a Collision Mitigation Braking System™ (CMBS™) with Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Lane Keeping Assist (LKAS), Road Departure Mitigation (RDM) with Lane Departure Warning (LDW) and Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), and is available as a standalone option on all trims with the exception of Touring, where Honda Sensing is included as standard equipment.

Also, all 2016 Accords feature a standard Multi-Angle Rearview Camera and Expanded View Driver's Mirror and, for the first time, new auto high-beam headlights (Touring trim) that enhance nighttime visibility and driving convenience by defaulting to the high-beam setting and automatically switching to low beams when an oncoming vehicle is detected.

Display Audio with Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™
The Accord audio and digital experience also is significantly upgraded with the application of a 7-inch Display Audio touchscreen interface featuring Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto, on EX and above trims, as well as available HondaLink™ Assist (e911) and HD Radio. The intuitive and easy-to-use capacitive touchscreen lets users swipe, tap and pinch—just like on a tablet or smartphone—to control the vehicle's audio system, display settings and other advanced features.

Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto are designed to support seamless smart phone integration and offer a multitude of new functions and features.

Apple CarPlay® takes the things you want to do with your iPhone while driving and puts them right on your car's built-in display. You can get directions, make calls, send and receive messages, and listen to music right from the touchscreen or by voice via Siri. Supported apps include Phone, Messages, Maps, Music and compatible third party apps. Apple CarPlay® is compatible with iOS 7.1 or later and iPhone 5 or later.

Android Auto was designed to give drivers a simple, intuitive way through touch and voice to minimize the potential for distraction so the driver can stay focused on the road. Compatible with Android 5.0 and higher, Android Auto features Google Maps, Google Now, messaging, music and numerous popular apps.

To take full advantage of these new systems and features, the 2016 Accord's new 7-inch Display Audio touchscreen is paired with an upper 7.7-inch high-resolution display screen and steering wheel-mounted controls. The upper screen can display audio settings, turn-by-turn directions, time and trip information, LaneWatch™ and Rearview Camera displays, incoming calls, SMS text messages when stopped, and parking sensor alerts.

Upgraded Features
The Accord value proposition is further bolstered by new standard and available features: Accord EX and above trims (Sedan and Coupe) with automatic transmission get remote engine start, 7-inch Display Audio touchscreen and HD Radio. SiriusXM satellite radio and Homelink remote, previously on EX-L and Touring, are now standard on EX and above trims. Sport and above trims in the sedan lineup also get a new 60/40 split and folding rear seat, previously a one-piece folding design. The Accord Sedan in Touring trim gets heated rear seats, front and rear parking sensors and new rain-sensing windshield wipers.

Advanced Powertrains
The Accord will continue to be offered with two advanced Honda engines: a direct-injected (DI) 2.4-liter inline i-VTEC™ 4-cylinder and a 3.5-liter VTEC™ V-6 that is the most powerful engine offered in a Honda sedan to date. Available transmissions include a sporty and fuel-efficient continuously variable transmission (CVT) for the 4-cylinder engines, unique 6-speed manuals for the 4-cylinder and V-6 engines, and a 6-speed automatic for V-6 models.

Honda to start leasing walking assistance device

A Honda Motor Co. engineer demonstrates the walking aid in Tokyo on Tuesday. | AFP-JIJI
Honda Motor Co. will start lease sales in November of its Honda Walking Assist Device for use in mobility rehabilitation at hospitals and other facilities in Japan.

The 2.7-kg device, which is worn on the waist and thighs, helps to lift the user’s knees when walking.

It uses technologies employed by the automaker’s Asimo bipedal humanoid robot and is designed to help people recover their ability to walk after suffering incapacity such as paralysis following a stroke.

In time, wearers will acquire strength in their leg muscles and may find it easier to walk without the device’s assistance, Honda said.

Health care professionals such as physical therapists need to be with the wearer when the device is used as it has to be configured to the way the wearer walks.

The device has already been used at some medical institutions since 2013 on an experimental basis.

Honda aims to lease 450 units annually. The device, which can be used for about an hour on a single charge, will be leased for ¥45,000 per month.

Japan is fast embracing the use of robotics in daily life. The government’s revamped Japan Revitalization Strategy lists support for robotics research and development as one of the main areas of focus.

Earlier this month, Tokyo’s Haneda airport said it will test new robot technologies under a joint project with leading robotics developer Cyberdyne Inc. In the initial phase of the project, Cyberdyne will provide its HAL exoskeletal robot suits to help airport workers complete loading tasks.
Furthermore, the Huis Ten Bosch theme park in Nagasaki Prefecture opened the Hen na Hotel (Weird Hotel) this month, which has robot front-desk staff. Other robots serve coffee and do the cleaning.

Meanwhile, Mizuho Bank has introduced Pepper, SoftBank Corp.’s talking humanoid robot, in its flagship branch in central Tokyo as a receptionist.

Autoguide: Honda Boss Says There’s ‘Absolutely’ Room For a New Sports Car

“I can’t tell you anything about the ‘baby NSX’ … I could, but I’d probably get fired.”

by Craig Cole of www.autoguide.com

Those are the words of John Mendel, executive vice president of American Honda and a man who is, most likely, intimately familiar with a new mystery sports car the brand appears to be planning.

Recently uncovered patent illustrations seem to indicate that Honda is developing something that looks like a shrunken version of its new NSX supercar. Or not. We really don’t know.

But we’re pretty certain Mendel does and the fact that he even acknowledged this car speaks volumes.
When queried about upcoming vehicles, executives inevitably respond with a carefully rehearsed line about “not commenting on future products.” Read into all of this what you want, but it sounds promising.

Today there’s definitely whitespace in Honda’s lineup for some enthusiast-focused models. Right now the only performance car they offer is the Civic Si and it’s about as hot as a bowl of vichyssoise. When asked if there’s room for a dedicated driver’s machine Mendel said, “Absolutely there is.”

Could the firm be working on a successor to the much-loved S2000 sports car that was discontinued several years ago? We certainly hope so, though the vehicle shown in those patent drawings seems to be something more, perhaps even a budget version of the NSX. Wouldn’t that be awesome?

Sporty but quirky, Honda’s S660 is a car of contradiction

Ryo Mukumoto, the youngest ever manager to oversee the development of a new Honda Motor Co. car, poses with the S660 sports car, at Honda headquarters in Tokyo in May.
by Atsushi Kodera of www.japantimes.co.jp

Honda Motor Co.’s name may currently be tainted with the global air bag recalls, but it has proved that it remains an automaker with an attitude, launching a new, genre-defying mini sports car developed by a twenty-something pioneer.

Debuted on April 2, Honda’s S660 is a car of contradiction. It’s a two-seat roadster that delivers a sports appearance for drivers who seek that. Its strikingly sleek body turns heads, and it features a dinky steering wheel and an extremely low driving position typical of roadsters.

Moreover, small windows at the back can be opened electronically so that the occupants can hear the roar of the rear-mounted engine. Even the two heavy doors shut with satisfying thuds.

Yet, it’s a kei class minicar, with diminutive dimensions, limited power and the squeaky sound of an engine displacement of just 660 cc.

“What I had in mind was a car that’s fun to both look at and drive. More than anything else, I wanted to pursue that aspect,” said Ryo Mukumoto, who came up with the initial concept and led the development of the unique car.

He said the idea owes partly to racing karts, which the development team tried out at a track in the process of cementing S660′s concept.

“Racing karts are slow, maybe like 50 kph to 60 kph maximum. You can feel the wind, and the top speed may be low but there’s this great feeling each time you turn a corner,” he said.

“When people talk about sports cars, they talk about high-powered machines, they talk about speed exceeding 300 kph, they talk about hundreds of horsepower and so on, but in fact there are already lots of sports cars like that out there. The truth is, you can enjoy a sports car without driving at high speeds.”

Its features place the S660 in a unique position in today’s domestic auto market, where top sellers tend to be eco-friendly, low-priced and practical.

The concept and the bold decision to pick a young manager for the project were hailed by critics and Honda fans alike as signs that Honda remains an automaker with attitude. Honda has received orders for 8,600 units of S660 to be delivered by the end of the year and an undisclosed number it plans to deliver by next June. Those placing an order now will be told to expect delivery after that time, though the company is working to boost the pace of production.

While it’s not exactly a leading earner for Honda, the car’s success is a bright spot for the company that remains mired in massive recalls related to defective air bags supplied by Takata Corp.

At the S660 launch in April, the media focus was equally on Mukumoto himself, a previously unknown 26-year-old appointed to head the development team to the surprise of many.

Picked for the job in 2010, just four years after he joined Honda fresh out of high school, Mukumoto is a Cinderella of a man who skipped having to tread the corporate ladder and leaped into the media spotlight from an inconspicuous initial position as a concept model-builder.

“My initial job was a ‘hard modeler,’ which was to use wood-like plastics to create mock-up models that are realistic to the touch. So, I was working with a chisel and plane,” he said.

Born and raised in Okayama Prefecture, Mukumoto was convinced at a young age he wanted to work for Honda after reading a children’s biographical manga depicting Soichiro Honda, who founded the company after the war and nurtured it into becoming one of the nation’s largest carmakers.

Chance smiled upon the self-described car enthusiast in 2010 when he still felt he “had a lot of catching up to do” with experienced colleagues in modeling skills. That year, he won an in-house competition that invited all ranks to submit ideas for a new car. His quirky concept of a yurusupo, or yurui (laid-back) sports car, beat some 400 rival submissions, including from experienced engineers.

Using the Japanese word meaning “not tight” or “slack” — and presumably aiming to borrow from the popularity of Kumamon and other yuru-kyara regional mascots — Mukumoto portrayed in his submission a sports car that allows the driver to relax and enjoy the feel of driving, the antitheses of cars aimed strictly at drivers intent on negotiating curves at high speeds.

When the company assembled a car based on his concept as a prize, it caught the eye of then-CEO Takanobu Ito, who put it into mass production.

In March 2011, a development team was formed with 15 members, each responsible for a specific area of work, and at 22 Mukumoto was assigned to lead them, becoming the youngest person in the company’s history to take a position craved by Honda engineers.

Mukumoto plays down talk of his skills, denying that he has any particular leadership or engineering genius.
“People talk about me a lot, but I want to note the team itself was unique,” Mukumoto said.

Instead of choosing veterans in engine design, chassis, suspension, body and so on, the company formed the team by advertising in-house for volunteers — “Like, ‘Hey, anyone want to do this?’,” Mukumoto said — assembling a team of highly motivated individuals who happened to be relatively young.

“In terms of enthusiasm, we are not at all inferior to the veterans; well, we may even be superior,” he added.
And they were all unique individuals, too, Mukumoto said, sounding proud of being part of a team with a difference.

“I remember being all jittery when I opened the door” at Honda’s Tochigi Prefecture lab, away from Wako lab in Saitama Prefecture where he had been, to meet the strangers he was to form the team with. “Then I saw some people with really shocking appearances turn their heads toward me. I mean, one had his hair tied like a samurai, another had his hair dyed gold and another was a skin head.

“It was a team of individuals with so much character. So much so that I immediately shut the door, saying, ‘Oops, wrong room,’ ” he chuckled.

According to Mukumoto, the team operated in a democratic and constructive manner, with older, experienced members supporting the novice leader. There was a friendly, positive atmosphere in the team that they now call a “family” where one member’s suggestion would be batted back and forth with ideas coming from unexpected angles, Mukumoto said.

“They were people who knew what they had to do, and it wasn’t like me giving specific instructions. It was like we were forming a circle, so to speak, not like someone leading a team. I guess real leaders aren’t like me, but that’s how we operated.”

“I don’t know what I don’t know, and everybody in the team was like, ‘He doesn’t know’, so they went out of their way and explained what I didn’t know,” Mukumoto admits. “So it was like, working together while being taught.”

As details were worked out on Mukumoto’s concept, his original ideas went through significant changes. His outward design, for example, was discarded and one developed by the Wako lab was adopted. The overall concept itself was reworked from scratch, he said.

But asked what aspects of his ideas remain intact in S660, his answer was firm.

“When you think of roads in Japan, you can never ignore the fact the speed range is low. So what I envisioned was a car that you can enjoy to the maximum within the limitations of Japan’s ordinary roads, and a sports car in the minicar class, which is familiar to us Japanese. These are the concepts I had envisioned,” Mukumoto said.

“And the key was, it’s a car that anyone can enjoy at the wheel,” he continued. “In other words, it’s not a car only experts can enjoy, but a car enjoyable for experts, of course, but also for beginners, and hopefully as many people as possible.”

2017 Honda CR-V to grow in size

As mentioned in previous posts, Honda has plans for the next CRV.....
The above is NOT the next CRV, it isHonda's Concept D, obviously more wagon than SUV, however if they are indeed making the next CRV a 3 row option, they would need to stretch out the length.  Gives you an idea of a possible direction, raise the roof and get the idea.
Next version of the CR-V looks set to grow and could offer seven seats as standard when it goes on sale in 2017

by Darren Ross of www.autocar.co.uk

The next-generation Honda CR-V will be a larger and more premium product than the current car when it arrives in 2017, Honda’s head of cars in the UK Leon Brannan has confirmed.

Speaking to Autocar at the launch of the 2015 Honda HR-V in Lisbon, Brannan said the car would become larger in order to make room for the new HR-V in Honda’s product range.

Brannan also hinted that the new CR-V would offer seven seats as standard and four-wheel drive, in a bid to rival more premium products such as the Land Rover Discovery Sport and Volvo XC60.

“CR-V is a massive pillar for us,” Brannan said. “I’m not sure that HR-V in the UK will ever become a four-wheel drive car, most people in this segment will vote with their feet and buy two-wheel drive. So if we can assume that HR-V will ever only be two-wheel drive, then you’ve got to proposition [with CR-V].

“Can we compete with Land Rover as a brand? That’s less about CR-V and more about Honda as a brand. Now we have the growing vehicle line-up you’ll see more communications about Honda.”

The interior of the new CR-V is expected to borrow heavily from the HR-V, including that car’s touchscreen infotainment system and dashboard layout.

Engines could mirror those found in the HR-V, including the 118bhp 1.6-litre diesel and 128bhp 1.5-litre petrol.

The next Honda CR-V is expected to be built in Canada before being imported into the UK.

2016 Honda Pilot Commercials; The Incredible Pilot Elite and Buddy Holly

Honda sets new GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ title for fuel efficiency, averaging 2.82 litres per 100km (100.31mpg) in 13,498km (8,387 mile) drive across 24 EU countries.

Honda has set a new GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title for ‘Lowest fuel consumption – all 24 contiguous EU countries (all cars)’, recording an average 2.82 litres per 100km (100.31mpg) over 13,498km (8,387 miles), in a 25 day drive across all 24 EU contiguous countries.

Behind the wheel of a Honda Civic Tourer 1.6 i-DTEC for the entire journey were two members of Honda’s European Research & Development (R&D) team, Fergal McGrath and Julian Warren, who took on the challenge to further demonstrate the impressive real-world fuel economy of the Tourer.

The remarkable distance travelled is similar to the team driving to Australia from their home in the UK, stopping just nine times to refuel. The car achieved an incredible average 1500km (932 miles) on each tank of fuel, at a total fuel cost for the whole journey of just 645 Euros* (£459).

The team set out on their epic road trip from Aalst, Belgium, on Monday June 1st, navigating the continent in a clockwise direction. They returned to their start point on Thursday June 25th, recording the incredible fuel economy figures which exceed the Tourer’s quoted efficiency of 3.8 litres per 100km (74.3mpg), by more than 25%.

Fergal McGrath comments: “It was tough, but we really enjoyed it, and setting this new GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title has made all of the hard work worthwhile. This was a huge team effort so I’d like to thank everyone involved for all of their commitment and support. After spending so much time behind the wheel Julian and I are just happy to be back behind our desks for a while!”

The official GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title is ‘Lowest Fuel Consumption – all 24 contiguous EU countries’, measured in litres per 100km and miles per gallon calculated over the entire journey.
Under the rules the same two drivers must be in the car for the whole journey, giving Fergal and Julian, Honda R&D colleagues of some 18 years and based in the UK, the challenge of driving an average of approximately 600km, taking around 7.5 hours, each day.

Based on strict and rigorous guidelines, the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title attempt required the car to enter each of the 24 countries specified, collecting a range of evidence including a fuel/mileage logbook, GPS readings, video and photographs and independent witness signatures to prove that it has done so. To ensure accurate monitoring of the route, journey time and distance driven, the record car was fitted with a tracking device, provided by fleet telematics and stolen vehicle recovery expert, TRACKER (part of the Tantalum Corporation).

Under the rules of the record title attempt the car must be a standard model in every respect, with no modifications to create an advantage, to replicate ‘real world’ conditions. This was judged by independent witnesses at the beginning and end of the attempt. Fuelling was carried out at regular filling stations, with the tank filled to the maximum at each stop to ensure no weight advantage. Additionally, tyres were inflated to the recommended pressures and the wheel alignment set to factory specification to represent the experience of the regular customer.

The team, both amateur drivers, were also keen to show that through adopting some simple but very effective driving techniques, anybody could achieve such remarkable fuel economy. They simply used some very logical methods including careful and sensible route planning, driving smoothly and consistently without harsh acceleration or braking, anticipating the road conditions ahead, carrying no unnecessary weight, and ensuring that the car was correctly maintained at all times. Driving speed was always within the law and keeping up with traffic conditions.

Kate Saxton, Manager – PR Communications at Honda Motor Europe Ltd comments: "This is an incredible achievement and the team should all be very proud of the efforts that they have put in to set this new GUINNESS WORLD RECORD. Driving the equivalent distance from their home in the UK to Australia in just 25 days is a huge challenge very few would take on. The fuel economy figures are remarkable – particularly when you consider that this is not a small car, but a tourer with class-leading load space and vast practicality.”

MOTORTREND: The Big Test: 2015-2016 Subcompact Crossovers

Generation Gap: Subcompact CUVs Square Off for Millennial Buyers

By Christian Seabaugh | Photos By William Walker |

There's a theory in the study of generations that after a set time the traits that define one generation repeat for a future generation.

I'd argue that the auto market responds to the same generational shifts. Take a look at the average car that someone in the 1930s would drive, such as the Chevrolet Standard Six. Cars were two-box sedans that efficiently used all the space allotted by the car's wheelbase, and because of the poor quality of the pre-interstate highway American roads, these sedans rode high for better ride quality. Sound familiar? It should. Two-box designs to maximize interior volume and storage? Check. High ride to handle crumbling urban roadways? You got it. These subcompact crossovers are the auto industry's answer to those early requests, remade for the millennial generation.

Some, such as the Nissan Juke SL and Subaru XV Crosstrek, are established players. Others—the 2015 Chevrolet Trax LT, 2016 Honda HR-V, 2015 Jeep Renegade Latitude, and 2016 Mazda CX-3—are new to the scene.

Ride and Handling....

On the ride front, it's tough to beat the Subaru XV Crosstrek. Thanks to the longest wheelbase and the most ground clearance in the group, the Crosstrek's ride impressed us on our driving loops. "Most comfortable ride yet," logged associate editor Scott Evans. "It doesn't give up a lot in handling, either." At least not subjectively. Objectively, the XV was near the back of the handling pack—thanks to its economy-oriented CVT, the tall crossover lapped the figure eight in 28.0 seconds at a 0.60 g average.

The Jeep Renegade is another ride quality standout. The Renegade's ride is firm yet forgiving. The Renegade will toss its driver around a bit on some severe undulations, but it's never punishing. "Jeeplike" is probably the best way to describe it. At the track, the Renegade lapped the figure eight in a lengthy 28.4 seconds at 0.61 g. Associate online editor Benson Kong said it offered "sharp and immediate braking and steering reflexes." The Trax and HR-V fell somewhere in the middle. The Trax generally had good road manners, though some thought the Chevy exhibited excessive body roll during cornering. The Honda's ride was on the harsher side for a CUV with non-sporting pretensions, but none of us really found it objectionable. The HR-V lapped the figure eight in 28.0 seconds while averaging 0.62 g, and the Chevy took 29.2 seconds at 0.56 g.

"These six subcompact crossovers are the auto industry’s answer to century-old requests, remade for the millennial generation."

The pocket rockets from Mazda and Nissan were best in test for handling. Both the CX-3 and Juke live up to their sporty designs. The CX-3's ride is stiff but never punishing, with digital director Chris Clonts noting that the CX-3 "handles highway expansion joints and medium hits really well with no bucking." Said Evans, "You could have some fun with this one." Overall, the Juke's ride quality is a mixed bag. The Nissan handles large bumps well, but it gets brittle quick over washboard sections of road. The CX-3 and Juke were neck and neck during our handling tests. The Mazda did a 27.6-second lap at 0.66 g, and the Juke lapped the figure eight in 27.1 seconds at 0.67 g.

Honda BR-V seven-seat crossover rendered based on official sketch

Debuts next month

The upcoming Honda BR-V has been digitally imagined ahead of next month's official introduction.
Honda is cooking up a Bold Runabout Vehicle (BR-V) for Asian markets and chances are it will be a stretched, seven-seat version of the XR-V sold only in China. Seen here is a speculative render based on an official teaser sketch released at the beginning of this week when Honda described the model as a "new generation crossover utility vehicle."

The three-row BR-V was developed by Honda R&D Asia Pacific in Thailand and styled with a "tough and solid" body and will be shown as a prototype at the Indonesian Auto Show next month. The production version is due next year and will be offered with a 1.5-liter gasoline engine teamed up with a choice of two gearboxes.

Other details about the model are limited at this point, but Honda promises it will pack lots of safety kit as standard, along with an increased ground clearance and "great fuel efficiency" while delivering "sporty performance."

We will know more on August 20 when the BR-V prototype will debut at the Gaikindo Indonesian International Auto Show.

New Honda CEO says no plans to help air bag firm Takata fund global recalls

Honda Motor Co"s new President and Chief Executive Officer Takahiro Hachigo speaks during a news conference at the company"s headquarters in Tokyo, Japan, July 6, 2015.

By Minami Funakoshi

TOKYO (Reuters) - Honda Motor Co's 7267.T new chief executive said the Japanese automaker has no plans for now to provide financial aid to Takata Corp 7312.T, the air bag supplier at the center of a costly global safety recall that has dented Honda's public image as well as its earnings.

Speaking at his first news conference since taking the helm in June, Takahiro Hachigo said on Monday Honda has now set aside enough this year to cover the cost of recalling over 2 million cars with potentially faulty air bag parts made by Takata. The automaker recently restated last year's earnings to account for additional costs.

"We have money budgeted for quality-related costs, as we did last year, and we think we can respond within this allocated amount," Hachigo told reporters in the capital. Last month Honda revised its operating profit for the year ended March to 606.88 billion yen ($4.92 billion) from the 651.68 billion yen it reported in April to account for expanded recall costs.

At 55, Hachigo, begins his stewardship of Japan's third-biggest auto maker with a mission to restore the firm's reputation for quality. In the Takata air bag safety scare regulators have linked eight deaths to the component, all in cars made by Honda.

Hachigo's predecessor Takanobu Ito and other executives took a pay cut last October following a fifth recall of its Fit hybrid subcompact in a year, which had quality glitches unrelated to Takata-made inflators.

In total, tens of million of cars carrying Takata-made parts have been recalled around the world by a range of auto makers. Some Takata air bag inflators have exploded with too much force, spraying shrapnel inside vehicles, regulators have found.

As Hachigo seeks to develop business, he said on Monday the company remains open to alliances with other automakers - as long as such tieups are of benefit to Honda.

In one such deal the Japanese firm already has an alliance with General Motors Co GM.N to develop hydrogen fuel-cell technology.

Hachigo also said Honda began building cars in Africa this month by retooling part of a factory in Nigeria that previously made motorcycles. The company plans to produce 1,000 of its Accord sedans annually at the plant, with a view to boosting production if the local market grows.
