Honda Civic Tourer Active Life Concept puts cycling first

Concept variant of Honda's capacious Civic Tourer estate is ideal for wannabe Chris Hoys, and will be on display at Frankfurt

Honda is set to reveal a concept version of its Civic Tourer estate at the Frankfurt Motor Show, named the Honda Civic Tourer Active Life Concept. It aims to add style to the already spacious estate with several new features, including loads aimed at keen cyclists.

The Active Life Concept features a smart bike loading rack, capable of transporting two bikes fully enclosed inside the car. The rack allows the bikes to be extended outwards from the rear hatchback, enabling easy maintenance, while the hatch itself features an extending shade and integrated light above a retractable bench to make on-the-fly repairs are a piece of cake.

Other storage solutions include a specially designed aerodynamic roof box, for carrying smaller accessories such as helmets, while squeezed into the Active Life Concept's 1,668-litre load space are a toolbox, water tank and front wheel holder.

Up front, the Civic Tourer's usual interior remains but it's been given a sporty makeover with blue detailing on the steering wheel, seats, gearshift and across the dash. A black roof lining mimics that found on the Honda Civic Type R while blue highlights echo the paint finish on the outside where you'll also find brand-new 18-inch alloy wheels and a custom rear bumper.

The Honda Civic Tourer Active Life Concept is powered by the 1.6-litre i-DTEC engine found in the regular Civic. Honda are keen to remind potential customers that this engine recently set a new Guinness World Record for fuel economy - achieving 100.31mpg. Great news then, if you're following the Tour de France and don't want to stop to fill up. The Civic Tourer Active Life Concept will be displayed at this year's Frankfurt Motor Show.
