MagX: Honda is Developing Another Hybrid Car with Extended Range (Next Gen Honda Insight?)

This picture is purely speculation as to the direction Honda would go.
I used Google Translate for this below;

Honda to start insights that led to price collapse in the field of hybrid car , has been threatening the monopoly of Toyota seems to mount a fight again . I close to the next-generation Honda environmentally friendly vehicles .

Insight was forced to end production for the second time , but Honda is not gave up environment -friendly vehicles . Apart from the fuel cell vehicles that run using hydrogen , that you are developing a set with the new hybrid car that can be called Insight successor car , (which was equipped with a power -only engine to electric vehicles ) range extender is discovered . There is a common denominator of many in this 2 car .

What surprised Among them would be to share the 1.5L engine . If you look at the range extender that other companies are selling and development , you have hired a necessary and sufficient to power a small amount of exhaust unit to the engine . However , Honda seems to use the (?) 1.5L Atkinson cycle engine also luxury. It might have been thought those who shared with another car than to develop the engine of the range extender dedicated and are low cost .

Hybrid , greatly improve this engine . And installation of waste heat recovery system , the adoption of grill shutter to help water temperature management , such as by the use of ultra-low- viscosity oil , and of achieving (the ratio of thermal energy is converted into such power ) thermal efficiency of 40%. I-MMD same as the Accord, ie electric system of two motor method is adopted in the drive system . Powerful driving of motor unique is hammered out on the front, range extender that aim to 8 seconds 0-100km / h acceleration .

Range in a fully charged is about 80km, and surpassed rival Chevrolet Volt next Prius PHV or (61km) a (60km). Lithium -ion battery is mounted under the floor , to reduce power consumption by using a heat pump for air conditioning .

Unlike the range extender , hybrid placed in the rear seat under the lithium-ion battery . It is scheduled to be embedded DC-DC converter that can convert freely DC voltage is also reduced in size.

For improved fuel efficiency , lighter also be achieved , of course. 61mpg ( about 26km / L) is aimed at the composite fuel economy of the United States as the main battlefield . Also from 50mpg (about 21km / L), the Prius is a rival 'll see whether the car will be a highly efficient how.

Towards the range extender is fast , start mass production is off line at the Saitama Prefecture Sayama factory in July 2016 . Hybrid car production to the main North American Indiana plant in the spring of 2017 . It is expected that the domestic market is also made in North America .

※ It is forecast article about the announcement of new vehicles in the 26 August 2014 . It does not guarantee the announcement.

Honda Previews Hybrid 'Concept B' Hatch At Beijing Auto Show (Honda Insight Replacement?)

by Anthony Ingram

It's a sign of how important the Chinese car market is becoming, that major automakers seem to show as many new concept vehicles in Beijing as they do at more traditional auto show venues.

The latest to emerge from the Chinese show's halls is Honda's Concept B, previewing a hatchback due on the Chinese market in 2016.

Unfortunately, it's not a replacement for the recently-canned Honda Insight--but the production hatch will offer a hybrid powertrain, sold under the unusual 'FUNTEC' banner.

While there's an element of marketing-speak to the tag, Honda says the model will have both "excellent fuel economy" and provide "excellent driving pleasure".

Unfortunately, there are no details on the hybrid powerplant itself--though it's likely to be a development of Honda's i-DCD single-motor setup used in the Honda Fit Hybrid (available only in Japan) and the Fit-based Vezel Hybrid (likewise).

Honda is keen to introduce hybrid technology to the Chinese market, where regulations are clamping down on fuel economy and emissions limits.

Other Concept Bs should still be frugal, though--the cars will be available with a choice of CVT or dual-clutch transmissions, stop-start tech and Honda's other 'Earth Dreams Technology' engine tweaks.

The Concept B itself is aimed at younger customers, with a sporting, dynamic five-door liftback body style.

The look is a lot more striking than Honda's existing offering in the market, the Civic, while a long list of upscale features, including a head-up display and lane departure warning, will be available.

Sadly, as another car specially developed for the Chinese market, it's unlikely the sporty hybrid hatch will be coming to the U.S. upon its 2016 debut.

That, we suppose, is another sign of the importance of the Chinese car market--some of a manufacturer's most intriguing models will be reserved for China, and China alone...

AutoExpress: Honda Insight and CR-Z hybrids facing the axe

The Honda Insight and CR-Z hybrids are to be cut from Honda’s European line-up due to slow sales

by Tom Phillips of www.autoexpress.co.uk

The Honda Insight and Honda CR-Z hybrids could be axed in Europe before the next-generation models arrive, due to slow sales.

Although the updated Honda hybrids would still be sold in America and Japan, a company source said low volumes in shrinking markets like Spain and Italy meant the petrol-electric models were unlikely to reappear on this side of the Atlantic.

The current Honda Insight is powered by a 1.3-litre petrol engine, which is then boosted by an electric motor to improve power and emissions. In its cleanest form, it returns claimed average fuel economy of 68.9mpg and emits 96g/km of CO2 – some way behind the Toyota Prius, which claims 72.4mpg and emits 89g/km of CO2.

Although the latest Honda CR-Z breaks new ground by blending a hybrid drivetrain with a manual gearbox, for a sportier drive, it’s never quite struck a chord with buyers. The CR-Z doesn’t actually drive that well, while its claimed economy of 56.5mpg and 116g/km CO2 emissions mean the compromises required to run one just don’t add up.

However, the new Honda NSX supercar and new hybrid Honda Jazz won’t be affected, as the company says the proposed cuts to the range would be on a model-by-model basis.

When it arrives in 2015, the Honda NSX is expected to use a new direct-injection V6 petrol engine boosted by three electric motors – two on the front axle, and one built into the dual-clutch gearbox. Honda is aiming for a power output of more than 400bhp.

Meanwhile the all-new Honda Jazz hybrid will feature 1.5-litre petrol engine and electric motor that give a combined 133bhp. The old CVT is switched for a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, and economy figures should be around 85mpg and 85g/km of CO2. It arrives in spring 2014.

2012 Honda Insight Preview

The 2012 Honda Insight gets a new look, some new features and (believe it or not!) even better fuel economy.

An increasingly crowded hybrid field now includes the Ford Fusion, the Kia Optima and, of course, the venerable Toyota Prius. All are pricier, except the new 2012 Toyota Prius c, which offers a nearly price-level competitor for the Insight. Honda's looking to at last gain some ground on the Prius in 2012 with numerous updates, most subtle on their own, but together adding up to a pretty comprehensive update.

Outside, a thin, blue accent bar has been introduced on the grille to denote its high-tech hybrid identity, while restyled bumpers contribute to a 2% increase in aerodynamics. New headlight and brake light internal reflectors, slightly wider tires and new 15-inch wheel covers round out exterior tweaks.

Inside, a reconfigured rear seat offers improved legroom and head room, and the gauge cluster gets a more technically sophisticated look. Cupholders are bigger, seat fabric is posher, and the cabin is quieter. A rearview camera is now available, packaged with an upgraded optional navigation system.

Honda's Integrated Motor Assist featuring a 1.3L i-VTEC 4-cylinder gas engine and 10-kW electric motor develops 98 combined hp at 5,800 rpm and 123 lb-ft of torque at 1,000-1,700 rpm; new friction-reducing measures and a CVT automatic transmission mean fuel economy improvements this year. Its Eco Assist System further enhances the efficiency of throttle control, CVT operation, idle-stop duration, air conditioning and cruise operation, and provides feedback on driving style via a 3D-ish background in the speedo: green for really efficient, blue for not-so-much.

Fuel economy is now rated at 4.7L/100km around town and 4.4L/100km on the highway.

One trim, the LX, is available starting at $21,990.

Honda Malaysia: Facelifted Honda Insight

Honda Malaysia has introduced the facelifted Insight hybrid, in its 1.3 litre form. Aside from some external revisions, the facelift – which made its debut in Frankfurt last year – promises to deliver better fuel economy along with a string of other refinements.

Kicking things off are new front and rear bumpers, and the headlights now wear a tint of blue highlight. Additionally, the new grille design features a blue reflector underneath. The tailgate spoiler has also been slimmed, and together with a modified tail gate garnish and a reduction in the size of the wiper motor unit, results in overall increased rear visibility.

Appearance aside, the aerodynamics of the car have also been improved, reducing the running resistance and thus resulting in better fuel economy. The 1.3 litre IMA system – with 88 PS and 121 Nm from the engine and 14 PS and 78 Nm from the motor – gets some powertrain efficiency improvements.

Revisions to the CVT and mill, the latter in the form of reduced engine friction, as well as alterations to the air conditioning system, all do their bit to contribute to lower fuel consumption.
The Insight also features a quieter ride, with the inclusion of added noise insulation materials for better NVH (noise, vibration and harshness) performance. Meanwhile, the seats are now upholstered with a new fabric, and rear passengers now enjoy an extra head clearance of 15mm, following adjustments to the shape of the roof lining and the hip point of the rear seats.

Still on dual airbags, but there’s Hill Start Assist (HSA) and VSA on this one, and the wave key has been changed to a more compact jack-knife version. Four exterior colours abound, and these are Platinum Aqua Metallic, Premium White Pearl, Crystal Black Pearl and Alabaster Silver Metallic.

The facelifted Insight goes for RM99,800 (on-the-road), and comes with a five-year or 140,000 km warranty on the IMA battery. The best part is that you don’t have to wait long for one, if you’ve been eyeing it – fully aware of the current demand of the new Insight, Honda Malaysia says the waiting period for an Insight is now less than two weeks. No indication as to when the 1.5 litre job will arrive.

Upgraded 2012 Honda Insight Hybrid Offers New High-Tech Look, Improved Fuel Economy and More Features

10/17/2011 - TORRANCE, Calif.
A significantly updated 2012 Insight hybrid debuts today with new exterior styling, an enhanced interior, additional features on select models and an EPA fuel economy-rating1 improvement of 1 mpg. The Insight’s city/highway/combined EPA fuel economy rating1 of 41/44/42 mpg, up from 40/43/41 on the prior model, continues to offer the highest EPA fuel economy rating of any new vehicle currently available with a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) starting under $20,000.

The aerodynamically styled, five-passenger, five-door dedicated hybrid vehicle receives extensive changes inside and out for 2012. Exterior changes include a more distinctive grille design that introduces a thin, blue accent bar representative of the Insight’s high-tech hybrid identity. Restyled front and rear bumpers, along with changes under the vehicle, contribute to a 2-percent increase in aerodynamic performance. New designs for the headlight and brake light internal reflectors further complete the refreshed look. Insight and Insight LX models have new 15-inch wheel covers and the Insight EX has newly styled 15-inch alloy wheels. Slightly wider 185/60R15 tires, up from 175/65R15 tires on the prior model, contribute to confident driving performance.

The Insight’s interior refinements for 2012 include a reconfigured rear seat area for better leg and head room; a redesigned gauge cluster background with a more technically sophisticated appearance; reshaped center-console beverage holders that accommodate larger drinks; and a more supportive front armrest (Insight LX and EX).

The Insight LX has new, more premium seat fabric, while the Insight EX is upholstered with a combination of synthetic leather (new) and premium fabric. Rear-seat headroom improves by 0.6 inches with changes to the rear headliner shape and deeper sculpting of the rear seat cushion to improve rear passenger comfort. Rearward visibility improves with a more compactly mounted rear-wiper motor housing and a thinner rear spoiler that creates a larger viewing area out the lower back window. The Insight becomes quieter for 2012 with increased thickness to the vehicle’s existing noise-insulation materials and additional insulation panels in the cargo area.
Available on Insight EX models, the Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System™ with voice recognition2 receives several notable upgrades including the addition of a rearview camera. The system provides routing and guidance to individual addresses and more than 7-million points of interest within the continental United States. A 16-GB flash memory system replaces the 4.7-GB DVD-based system used on the prior model. The new system offers faster route calculation and includes FM traffic, a subscription-free service that alerts drivers to traffic conditions.

The Insight is powered by an Integrated Motor Assist™ (IMA™) system comprised of a 1.3-liter i‑VTEC® gasoline 4-cylinder engine and a 10-kilowatt electric motor. The combination develops 98 horsepower at 5800 rpm and 123 lb-ft. of torque at 1000-1700 rpm. For 2012, friction-reducing measures in the engine and the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) contribute to the new model’s increased fuel economy. A 10.6-gallon fuel tank provides an estimated maximum driving range exceeding 400 miles.

The Insight features the Eco Assist™ System, an innovation that can enhance efficient vehicle operation while providing feedback related to individual driving styles. Eco Assist can help drivers improve fuel efficiency, both by altering vehicle functionality and providing driver feedback, with fuel economy dependent on their given set of driving conditions. Pressing the ECON button can further enhance the efficiency of multiple vehicle systems: throttle control, CVT operation, idle-stop duration, air conditioning and cruise-control operation (if equipped). Eco Assist also provides feedback about driving style via a 3D-like background within the speedometer. The background changes colors from green to blue to reflect how efficiently or inefficiently the driver is accelerating or braking (green is more efficient).

Aerodynamic refinements for 2012 include changes to the shape of the engine bay underbody cover and the addition of air diffusers under the rear bumper to smooth airflow exiting behind the vehicle. The strakes ahead of the front wheels have been extended by 0.4 inches to better direct air around the wider front tires.

Standard safety features on all Insight models include dual-stage, multiple-threshold front airbags; front-side airbags with a passenger-side Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS); side-curtain airbag system; anti-lock brakes with electronic brake distribution (EBD); driver’s and front-passenger’s active head restraints; and a front body structure designed to mitigate pedestrian injuries. The Insight also features Honda’s Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure, which provides improved occupant protection and crash compatibility between vehicles of different sizes and ride heights in frontal crashes.

Honda Boss: Next Insight Will Beat Prius MPG

Takanobu Ito, Honda’s president, said last week that the company has grown “complacent,” and specifically pointed to its poor performance with hybrids as a key sign of the problem. To correct the situation, Ito is pushing his engineers to have the next-generation Honda Insight beat the Toyota Prius’s fuel economy numbers—and to deliver it as soon as possible.

"I'm not satisfied," Ito told Automotive News. In the first quarter of 2010, Honda’s share of the US market fell to 10.1 percent—from 10.5 percent a year earlier.

In concept, the Honda Insight was intended to compete as a more affordable alternative to Toyota Prius. But the price of the Insight, typically in the low $20,000s, is not the much cheaper than a Prius—and the fuel economy is considerably lower. The Prius gets 51 mpg in the city and 48 on the highway, compared with the Insight's 40/43. The copycat shape of the Insight added to the negative comparison with the Toyota Prius, which has outsold the Insight by about 5 to 1.

In addition to trying to beat the mileage of the Prius, Ito wants to roll out a new two-motor hybrid technical design—one motor employed to increase engine power and another to solely charge the battery. The new system is also likely to switch to lithium ion batteries from the nickel metal hydride technology currently in use. Honda will apply its new hybrid approach to a minivan and in Acura models. A rework of Honda's hybrid system could potentially create a technology pathway to plug-in hybrids.

More Lessons to be Learned
Honda’s new and improved hybrids are not expected until about 2012. Meanwhile, the company will introduce the Honda CR-Z hybrid coupe this summer. Unfortunately, the small hybrid could be another case of neither-here-nor-there, at least according to Graham at Fifth Gear, the British television show. The CR-Z looks sporty enough, but at 122 horsepower, it's “not blessed with red-blooded speed,” said Graham. At the same time, the fuel economy averaging at 37 mpg is only “reasonable” and “doesn’t sound that good next to a Prius.”

Yet, Honda engineers and designers should take heed to Fifth Gear’s positive feedback on features that could be applied to future hybrids. Graham calls the interior “mad and brilliant,” and praises the availability of a six-speed manual gearbox—a first for hybrids. Given the CR-Z’s moderate level of high-speed handling and cool interactive dashboard features, the reviewer said, “You can’t accuse it of being dull.” Pricing in the US for the CR-Z has not yet been announced.

Honda's hybrid selling well

The Insight starts at 1.89 million yen (S$29,500) in Japan and will sell for under US$20,000 (S$30,800) in the US, the cheapest hybrid on the commercial market. -- PHOTO: AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE

TOKYO - ORDERS for the hybrid Insight have totalled 18,000 since it hit the Japanese auto market about a month ago, outpacing Honda's target and underlining the success of the new affordable and ecological vehicle, the company said on Tuesday.

The brisk demand for the gas-electric hybrid is a rare piece of good news for Honda Motor Co. as the auto industry grapples with plunging global demand. Honda, Japan's second biggest automaker, was hoping for the Insight's monthly sales to reach 5,000 vehicles.

The Insight starts at 1.89 million yen (S$29,500) in Japan and will sell for under US$20,000 (S$30,800) in the US, the cheapest hybrid on the commercial market. The Insight goes on sale in April in the US, and March in Europe.

Oil prices have tumbled from their peak last July, detracting from the possible appeal of gas-sipping hybrids. But the Insight is drawing a wide-range of buyers to the showroom, according to Tokyo-based Honda The Insight was the top-selling hybrid for February in the ranking of new vehicle registrations in Japan, totaling 4,906, or No. 10 among all hybrid and regular models, even though it wasn't on sale for the full month.

That outpaced the Prius hybrid from Toyota Motor Corp, at No. 12, with 4,524 registered for the month, and cumulatively the best-selling hybrid model.

Details of the Insight's overseas pricing are still being finalised. But it's cheaper than the Prius, at US$22,000 in the US and 2.3 million yen in Japan.

Toyota, which sold 285,700 Prius cars worldwide last year, is introducing a remodelled Prius in May, which is bigger and has a more powerful engine than the current Prius, and likely to be more expensive.

Japanese media have speculated that Toyota may continue selling the old Prius even after the remodeled version goes on sale - an unusual move for an automaker - to compete against the cheaper Insight.

Toyota has refused to comment on the report. But it is almost certain that the competition among hybrid offerings will intensify this year.

Last month, Honda chose a new president and chief executive Takanobu Ito, who has a career in engineering, to press ahead with innovations and prepare for long-term growth. -- AP

Honda Insight handily outselling projections in Japan

So far, all indications are that Honda has got a hit on its corporate hands in the form of its new Insight hybrid hatchback. The automaker had been hoping to get 5,000 orders per month in its home market of Japan for the new Insight, but that sales target was eclipsed after just over a week on the market. According to Honda, there were already 5,000 advance requests for the car before it was even available to order.

This early sales success may bode well for Honda, which will be launching the new Insight in Europe in March and in the United States in April. When it finally does reach dealerships, the Insight will cost well under $20K, undercutting its primary competitor, the Toyota Prius, by a few thousand dollars.

It's no secret that we're in a tough market and it could have been a case of very bad timing to launch a brand new global vehicle line. Fortunately for Honda, this seems like the right car at the right time. It will certainly be interesting to watch Toyota roll out its new 2010 Prius hybrid later this year.

Honda looking to price 2010 Insight Hybrid under $20k, may build it in the U.S.

Honda has started selling its 2010 Insight Hybrid in Japan with prices starting at 1.8 million yen ($20,052 USD). The Japanese automaker is looking to keep pricing of the U.S. bound Insight right under $20,000 and is supposedly considering building the hybrid in the U.S. if sales hit a target of 100,000 units annually.

According to Honda’s Executive Vice President Koichi Kondo, both goals will be tough for the company but must be necessary to compete with its rival - the Toyota Prius. Honda hopes to sell 100,000 of the Honda Insight Hybrid in the U.S. and 200,000 units worldwide, reports Automotive News.

The 2010 Honda Insight Hybrid will go on sale in the U.S. in April 2009. Power will come from a 1.3L SOHC i-VTEC engine mated to a CVT transmission. Coupled with Honda’s Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) hybrid technology that allows the Insight to return an EPA rated fuel-economy of 40/43 mpg (city/highway).

2010 Honda Insight Hybrid Makes World Debut at the North American International Auto Show

More affordable five-passenger, five-door Honda hybrid to go on sale in the beginning of April 2009

DETROIT, U.S.A., January 11, 2009– The all-new 2010 Honda Insight hybrid car made its world debut today at the North American International Auto Show. Utilizing the latest generation of Honda’s Integrated Motor Assist™ (IMA®) hybrid technology and new, more cost-efficient production methods, the 2010 Insight defines a new stage in the evolution of hybrid technology, providing hybrid customers with a new level of affordability, fun-to-drive performance, and a U.S. EPA city/highway fuel-economy rating of 40/43 miles per gallon.

The 2010 Insight will be launched at Honda dealers throughout the United States in the beginning of April 2009 and will be priced below the Civic Hybrid.

“Honda hybrids have always offered great value, high fuel efficiency and a healthy dose of fun near the middle price range in the Honda lineup,” said John Mendel, executive vice president of American Honda. “With the introduction of the all-new Insight, we’re opening up Honda’s fun-to-drive, versatile and fuel-efficient hybrid technology to an entirely new group of buyers that previously may not have considered a hybrid because of either image or cost."

Evoking the advanced and aerodynamic five-door sedan design first deployed on the revolutionary FCX Clarity fuel cell car, the new Insight has a low center of gravity and a spacious five-passenger cabin, offering the kind of driving experience and roomy, versatile interior space that customers have come to expect from Honda.

To help Insight owners realize the full benefits of Honda hybrid technology, the Insight will feature a new interactive, driver-focused fuel economy enhancement technology named the Ecological Drive Assist System (Eco Assist™). Eco Assist combines multiple functions:

-A driver-activated ECON mode that optimizes control of the continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT), engine and related powertrain components to further improve vehicle fuel efficiency;

-a driver feedback function that uses an innovative speedometer display with changing background colors to provide real-time guidance to the driver on achieving higher fuel efficiency; and

-a unique fuel-economy scoring function using a plant-leaf graphic to provide feedback to the driver on current-trip driving efficiency and lifetime fuel-efficient driving performance.

All Insights are powered by an advanced 1.3-liter SOHC aluminum-alloy i-VTEC engine and CVT, along with a new generation of Honda’s IMA hybrid system for exceptional fuel economy and fun-to-drive performance.

The Insight’s IMA system incorporates a 10-kilowatt (13 hp) electric motor and a compact Intelligent Power Unit (IPU) – recapturing and storing kinetic energy from vehicle braking and deceleration and supplying additional power for acceleration when needed. Packaging of the ultra-compact IMA battery and IPU in the vehicle’s rear floor allows the enhanced utility of a 60/40 split and fold-down rear seat back.

The Insight’s IMA system has the capability to operate exclusively on electric power in certain low- to mid-speed driving conditions. It also provides for cylinder deactivation within the gasoline engine during deceleration and for engine shutoff when the vehicle is stopped. With a 10.6-gallon fuel tank, the Insight delivers an estimated maximum driving range in excess of 400 miles.

Honda's new hybrid throws down the gauntlet to Toyota

PHOENIX — Oil prices are going up. As I sit here writing about Honda's new hybrid, the 2010 Insight, on the desk next to me is the front page of The New York Times declaring that major oil and gas projects now being delayed are setting the stage for "another surge in oil prices once the global economy recovers."
So a spike in the price of oil is really just a matter of time. For Honda right now, the price of oil is not so much an issue of time, but of timing.
That is, will pump prices go back up to the levels of last May/June that looked like they would make the launch of the gas-stingy 2010 Insight hybrid a smashing success?
In the early summer, with oil pushing $140 (U.S.) a barrel and apparently headed to $200 with a bullet — as predicted by Jeff Rubin at CIBC World Markets, among others — a clean emissions fuel sipper like the Insight looked like a slam-dunk winner.
Yet as the Times points out, "oil markets have had their sharpest-ever spikes and their steepest drops this year, all within a few months."
Indeed, by September, with oil prices sliding dramatically and pickup sales actually picking up, Honda nonetheless used the Paris motor show for the worldwide debut of a "concept" version of its new five-door gasoline-electric hatchback.
This hybrid, said Honda officials not quite willing to admit to past mistakes, would challenge rival Toyota's success with the Prius hybrid hatchback ($27,400). The new Honda would be far less expensive than the Prius — perhaps as low as $19,000 — and would thus set new standards in hybrid affordability.
By November, Honda was again teasing the public with more details about the Insight at the Los Angeles auto show. The company said its Insight would not only be cheaper than any other hybrid car on the market it would also become an almost instant best-seller.
The low price, said Honda types, would make it possible to sell 200,000 of the cars each year in Japan, Europe and North America. Toyota has yet to sell 200,000 Prius cars in a single year and it's the world's hybrid best seller.
Honda plans to introduce hybrid versions of other models, too. One is a sporty compact car, a 2+2 hatchback based on the CR-Z concept first shown a year ago at the Tokyo motor show.
The longer-term goal is to sell 500,000 hybrids a year world-wide by early next decade. Toyota, meanwhile, aims to reach annual sales of one million hybrids globally by the same time.
Thankfully, the Insight tease will be officially over by the second week of January. That's when Honda — one of the most secretive car companies in the world — will finally give us the straight goods on the Insight.
But why wait? After all, I am here in Phoenix to drive the Insight and get all the details first-hand. Unfortunately, in return for the chance to drive the car, I've agreed not to share what I've learned here in Arizona until Jan. 11. This is so that Honda can do a one-time global unveiling at the Detroit auto show.
But there is more than one way to tell a story. Using other sources, I've already pieced together almost all you need to know about the Insight.
The price will be in the $20,000-range. Not the mid-$20,000s and not the high-$20,000s, either. Take that, Prius. (For the record, Toyota will unveil a new version of the Prius in January at the Detroit show, though the likelihood of a major price drop is not great.)
Honda has reined in costs for the 2010 Insight by using Honda's existing Integrated Motor Assist hybrid powertrain, though in a smaller package and with lighter components.
Like the Civic Hybrid, the Insight's system combines an electric motor with a 1.3-litre VTEC engine. Its main power source, a highly efficient, lightweight gasoline engine, will be assisted by battery power.
Fuel economy should be in the same range as the Civic Hybrid ($26,350): 4.7 litres/100 km city/4.3 highway, versus 4.0 city/4.2 highway for the Prius.
Toyota's "full" hybrid setup is more fuel-efficient because it more thoroughly weds a battery-powered vehicle with a gasoline engine. The Prius is able to run only on batteries, only on gas, or some combination of the two thanks to smart electronic controls.
As the fuel-economy numbers indicate, Toyota's approach delivers unsurpassed fuel economy in city driving where battery power comes into play for stop-and-go driving. At slower speeds, say crawling through traffic, the Civic Hybrid cannot run on battery power alone and that will be true for the 2010 Insight.
On the other hand, like the Prius, the Insight only will be available as a hybrid. That will appeal to buyers who like to tout their eco-friendly credentials as they commute to work or pull up to the red carpet at the Oscars.
By contrast, the hybrid versions of the Honda Civic, Ford Escape, upcoming Ford Fusion and Toyota Highlander look virtually identical to their gasoline-powered counterparts. All that identifies them as hybrids are some discrete badges saying "hybrid."
So the Insight's ace in the whole, above everything else, is price, rather than image.
My burning question to Honda Canada executive vice-president Jerry Chenkin boils down to this: If oil prices don't go back up by April, if gas stays cheap, isn't the Insight in danger of being a giant and costly flop?
"No. If the price of gas were $1 a litre or 50 cents a litre or $2.00 a litre, Honda would still be developing this product — these products — because it is part of the culture," says Chenkin, a 35-year veteran of the auto industry. "It [the Insight] is not built to combat the price of gas; it's built to preserve the planet."
It's true that Honda does have the most fuel-efficient fleet in North America and that fact bolsters Honda's case as a "green" auto maker. During the glory days of big pickups and SUVs, Honda refused to join the party — although Honda does make a large SUV-like vehicle, the Pilot, and a big minivan, the Odyssey, and a mid-size pickup, the Ridgeline.
This year, Honda's big product introduction was the 2009 Fit ($14,980), which is rated at a healthy if not hybrid-like 7.2 L/100 km city/5.7 highway. The quirky little hatchback is doing well; Chenkin anticipates selling perhaps 20,000 Fits next year in Canada.
Chenkin insists that Honda is a philosophy-driven company and that's why Honda is pushing ahead with the Insight regardless of fuel prices. That same philosophy prevented Honda from pressing ahead with large SUVs and trucks, even when they were big sellers. Despite pressure from dealers, Honda never went ahead with a V-8 engine, either.
"Toyota went in that direction, not us," says an obviously competitive Chenkin.
The point Chenkin and other Honda officials want to make is that the Insight should register with a public familiar with Honda's approach to auto making. That includes a reputation for reliability and handling, not just fuel efficiency.
"Honda's cars seem to have more personality than Toyota's," said Aaron Bragman, an analyst with the research firm Global Insight in Troy, Mich. "Their cars are enjoyable to drive, and not just appliances."
Yes, but Toyota's success with hybrids, and Honda's stumbles with them, clearly grate on Honda officials. The Civic Hybrid barely registers with the public and the Accord Hybrid was cancelled due to an utter lack of interest.
Meanwhile, Toyota's Prius is the runaway leader in the category and Toyota has a handful of other hybrids in its lineup, too.
With the Insight, Honda is issuing its challenge to the Toyota in general and the Prius in particular. In a nutshell, Honda is committed to taking a leadership role in hybrid technology.
"This new Insight will break new ground by providing an affordable hybrid to an expanded number of customers craving great fuel economy and great value," said Takeo Fukui, Honda's CEO, in Paris.
In the end, the picture that emerges of Honda is of a stubborn, go-it-alone auto maker that is determined to learn from its mistakes, and chart its own course. Thus, the Insight concept is a Prius look-alike, but Honda's hybrid technology is vastly different and, in a way, more elegantly simple and highly efficient than Toyota's or Ford's or GM's.

Honda officials argue that its hybrid technology is cost-efficient and, in small commuter cars, it is ideal for squeezing out fuel economy gains and lower emissions in stop-and-go city driving.
Regenerative braking, meanwhile, recharges the onboard battery in all that rush-hour driving.
In a nutshell, Honda wants to sell a fleet of smaller hybrids with smaller sticker prices. The idea is to make hybrid cars mainstream by lowering the price to the point where the fuel economy savings more than offset the price premium.
Cost is one reason why Honda is not pursuing — for now, at least — a pure electric vehicle or plug-in hybrid. Electric cars make no sense until lightweight and affordable lithium ion batteries are available, company officials say.
But Honda may be close to rethinking its electric car stance, having finally inked a partnership with a lithium-ion battery supplier, GS Yuasa, that will manufacture next-generation lithium-ion batteries for Honda's gasoline-electric hybrid vehicles.
Lithium-ion batteries are lighter and more powerful than the nickel-metal hydride batteries used in the current Prius, Civic Hybrid and 2010 Insight, and thus they are seen as the next big advancement in electric cars and hybrids.
This latest move is another signal that Honda plans to be competitive despite a global recession and tight credit that is strangling demand for new vehicles and hurting profitability even at lean, efficient auto makers such as Honda.

Make no mistake, these are challenging times. Honda, Japan's second biggest automaker, recently cut its annual operating profit forecast by two-thirds.

What is most interesting is Honda's response to events. The company has gone into full crisis mode, with a long-term plan for recovery that recognizes oil prices will eventually go back up — and dramatically.

In prepared remarks in Japan last week, CEO Fukui said that Honda will fully concentrate its resources on the development of fuel-efficient products. The keys to achieve this goal are advancements of electromotive technologies including hybrid models as well as motorcycles and small cars.
So even as Honda is cutting spending on everything from Formula One racing (Honda is out of it) to senior executive pay (slashed by 10 per cent), the company is focusing on clean and fuel-efficient technologies.

Oil prices are going up and when they do, Honda plans to be there offering more than just one Insight hybrid.
