LOS ANGELES — The Honda Intelligent Horse, Hyundai Stratus Sprinter, Mercedes Silver Arrow, Smart 341 Parkour, Subaru Horizon and Maybach Berline are set to duke it out at the 2011 L.A. Auto Show Design Challenge.
The cars are inspired by vampires, Cinderella, a classic cowboy movie and crash-test dummies, say show organizers. Designers were charged with creating Hollywood's next hottest movie car.
The winner will be announced on November 17.
The Honda IH or Intelligent Horse is at the heart of a futuristic action-adventure movie called High Noon. "The Honda IH was inspired by the legend and material remains of an ancient creature called the horse and brought to life with advanced technology," said show organizers in a statement. It is the work of Honda Research and Development Americas.
The Hyundai Stratus Sprinter is the centerpiece of a vampire tale called Countess of Siberia. The vehicle has a "magical stealth force" that renders it invisible. It is the work of Hyundai Design North America.
The Mercedes Silver Arrow is the conveyance of two "enlightened" crash dummies who are pitted against the evil "Dr. Barrier" in an unnamed movie. It is inspired by the W125 series, a Silberpfeil racecar of the late 1930s and the Uhlenhaut SLR from the '50s. It is the work of Mercedes-Benz Research & Development North America.
The Smart 341 Parkour, which features a "fly mode" and a "climb mode" that allows it to climb skyscrapers, is the work of Mercedes-Benz Advanced Design Germany. The unnamed movie features a reporter looking for a scoop.
The Subaru Horizon stars in the action-thriller Divided. It can withstand strong electromagnetic fields, chemical imbalances, scorching heat and raging storms. It is the work of Subaru Design Studio Tokyo.
The Maybach Berline ferries a modern-day Cinderella in a romantic drama. It gets gullwing doors with oversized privacy glass, retractable stairs and a "Royal Lounge." It is the work of the Mercedes-Benz Interior Design Studio in Germany.
Inside Line says: Still pretty hard to beat Steve McQueen's 1968 Mustang GT in Bullitt.

What an exciting competition. I like the way that Honda fused ancient mythology with modern auto technology; very creative idea.
