President of Honda Cars
India, Katsushi Inoune, recently announced that the wheels had been set
in motion to bring the company's new BR-V compact SUV to Indian shores
by mid-2016. The car was first showcased at this year's Gaikindo
Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) and will be launched in
Indonesia this December. Here's a look at all that you need to know
about Honda's upcoming compact SUV.
Design and Interiors
Developed on the same platform as the Honda Brio hatchback, Honda Amaze compact sedan, and Honda Mobilio people carrier, the Honda BR-V,
or Bold Runabout Vehicle, bears a few similarities to its MUV cousin on
its sides but the front and rear facades have been designed to look far
more aggressive and SUV-esque. In fact, despite being categorized as a
compact SUV, the side profile of the BR-V looks distinctly similar to
the Mobilio thanks to its large glass house, long wheelbase and
prominent roof rails.
The front-end features smoked, angular headlamp units that sit in
continuation with the two-part, all-chrome front grille assembly. The
heavily sculpted bumper is meaty and adds ruggedness to the car's look.
It also stands 201mm of the ground, which is almost the same ground
clearance as the Renault Duster.
Moving on the rear end of the car. The horizontally mounted LED
tail-lamp clusters are connected by a brake light that runs across the
width of the car, right below the rear windscreen. The tailgate itself
is large and extends quite a way down and should make the Honda BR-V a
breeze to load. The number plate is fitted on the tailgate itself and
features a thick chrome highlight above it. The long rear overhang does
make the car seem more like an MPV but on the plus side, the BR-V gets a
third row of seats which is capable of comfortably fitting two adults.
Honda BR-V Dimensions:
Length:
4,456mm
Width:
1,735mm
Height:
1,666mm
Wheelbase:
2,660mm
Ground Clearance:
201mm
Passenger Capacity:
7
On the inside, the Honda BR-V receives pretty much the same all-black themed dashboard as those found in the Honda Jazz and Honda City.
The large touchscreen infotainment system sits in a piano black housing
with the HVAC controls located beneath it. Both the middle and rear row
of seats get adequate leg and headroom, making the BR-V a proper
7-seater. Other features are likely to include ABS, EBD, rear
air-conditioner, and new 16-inch alloy wheels. The list of expected
features is mentioned below.
Honda BR-V Expected Features:
Anti-lock Braking System (ABS)
Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD)
Hill Start Assist (HSA)
Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA)
Dual Front Airbags
16-inch Alloy Wheels
Rear Air-conditioner
Engine and Performance
In India, the Honda BR-V will be available in both petrol and diesel
variants. Both engines are currently doing rounds in several other Honda
offerings like the City and Mobilio. The petrol powertrain is currently
offered with an optional CVT automatic gearbox on the Honda City sedan
and it is likely that the BR-V will also receive a similar powertrain.
The 1.5-litre i-VTEC engine makes 119bhp and 145Nm of torque. Meanwhile,
the 1.5-litre i-DTEC diesel engine that's currently present in the
Jazz, Amaze, City, and Mobilio, makes 99bhp and 200Nm of torque.
However Honda claims that it's attempting to improve the performance of
its diesel engine. Some additional reports have suggested that a more
powerful 1.6-litre i-DTEC diesel engine may be offered instead of the
1.5-litre.

Pricing and Competition
Upon its launch in India next year, the BR-V will be competing in one
of India's most competitive automotive segments. It will face
competition from the likes of the well-settled Renault Duster,
hot-selling newcomer Hyundai Creta, and the Maruti Suzuki S-Cross. Prices are expected to range between 8 lakh - 12 lakh.
JeffX from the Temple
of VTEC managed to strap a VBOX onto the 2016 Honda Civic 1.5 Turbo and
extrapolated wheel horsepower as well as a 0-60 and quarter mile time.
Ever
since the 2016 Honda Civic Coupe and Sedan equipped with the 1.5 turbos
were handed out to a few lucky auto journalists, they’ve all been
hankering one way or another to stick one on a dyno to see just how fast
these turbos really are. JeffX from Temple of VTEC planned to do just that, but with his dyno guy nowhere to be found, he did the next best thing which was strap a VBOX performance meter
inside while he took the 2016 Honda Civic 1.5 Turbo out on some WOT
runs. It should be noted that at this time, the Coupe only comes
equipped with a CVT. The results were pretty surprising. Basically,
JeffX found out that the new 1.5 turbo power units were as quick as, if
not faster than the K24Z7’s found in the current 9th gen Honda Civic Si.
While
not actually a dyno, VBOX’s GPS unit and software is surprisingly
accurate. According to RaceLogic, “by using the carrier signals from
four to nine of 24 satellites, the VBOX measures speed to an accuracy of
0.1 percent.” And according to Car and Driver,
” Our own preliminary testing of the VBOX’s accuracy relative to our
Datron unit has proven the VBOX to be extremely accurate.” Heck, when Hennessey wants to break and verify speed world records, they use VBOX. Suffice to say, VBOX is a pretty accurate measurement tool.
To
accurately estimate WHP figures, an approximate total weight and a
level driving area is typically what is needed and is what we assume
JeffX put in properly into the VBOX unit.
The 2015 Honda Civic Si Coupe and Sedan puts out a respectable 205 HP and 174 lb-ft. Car and Driver was able to pull out a 6.5 second 0-60 MPH time and a 15.1 second quarter mile time. When you strap a stock K24 on the dyno,
you’ll typically see wheel hp/lb-ft around 180 HP and 160 lb-ft with
peak power well past 7000 RPM. Curb weight for the Honda Civic Si (with
no driver) is a tick over 1.5 tons, coming in at 3004-3011 pounds.
The
2016 Honda Civic EX Coupe with the 1.5 Turbo is rated at 174 HP at 6000
RPM with 16.5 psi of boost helping push torque numbers to 162 lb-ft.
According to JeffX’s VBOX, the 1.5 turbo put down between 164-166 HP to
the ground with no mention of torque figures ( if we estimate around a
six percent drivetrain loss, we’re looking at 152 lb-ft.) According to
JeffX, curb weight for the coupe plus the driver and 1/2 a tank of fuel
came out around 2,900 pounds. After a couple of power runs and standing
starts, according to VBOX, JeffX was able to pull off a 0-60 MPH time of 6.5 seconds and a quarter mile run of 14.9 seconds @ 97 MPH.
Here’s the kicker. The entire time, JeffX was using regular old 87
octane from California’s finest pumps. The 9th Gen Civic Si recommends
premium.
And when it comes to fuel efficiency, when all is said
and done from the EPA, the 2016 Honda Civic 1.5L turbo is expected to
return in excess of 40 MPG on the highway. The best a 2015 Honda Civic
Si could muster up is an EPA-rated 31 MPG.
So not only is the
mid-range 2016 Honda Civic as fast as a 2015 Honda Civic Si, it’s also
more efficient. And these unofficial results don’t account for a manual
when that hits the market sometime next year.
According to Jeffx in his final assesment,
The
car launches a bit soft with the CVT, but then it just charges and
pulls steadily. I have found it to be quite quick and actually fun to
drive as a “daily. Add to that the fact that you can easily achieve over
40mpg all day long on the freeway, and it makes this car a PHENOMENAL
“daily driver”. I’m trying to think of any cars in history that combine
this level of performance, refinement, comfort while still delivering an
honest to god >40mpg on the highway. I don’t think it’s happened.
All of this, in a fully loaded package for only $26,500. Seems like a
STEAL to me.
So if you’re in the market for something that you
want to zip around town in that’s quick on its feet, the 2016 Honda
Civic with 1.5L Turbo can fill that void.
Honda has yet to
release its 10th gen Civic Si and Type R, both promised to the North
American Market. Honda will most likely use a turbocharged 2.0 in the
Civic Si with a barn screamer turbo monster unit in the Type R.
Great. Greater. Greatest. Those are your viewing choices in
RPA's new interactive video for the Honda Civic, which lets you toggle
between a couple's three date scenarios and check out vehicle features
along the way.
The story in all three versions is essentially the same: A dude driving
a 2016 Honda Civic sedan picks up his gal for a night on the town. They
travel the same route, visit the same places and have similar
experiences in each clip. The details, however, are markedly different,
and the contrasts between the three dates are sometimes extremely
amusing.
Some differences are subtle. For example, the sunlight goes from
bright, to brighter, to brightest depending on how "great" the date is
(sadly, this is not the case in real life). Other variations are more
obvious. The spot recalls Honda U.K.'s famous The Other Side interactive film, though the RPA work is more cartoony.
On the "Great" date, the couple wear T-shirts and jeans, and they
high-five as the woman slides into the car. "Greater" finds them more
dressed up; the guy hands her flowers before they drive off. In
"Greatest," they're attired like the king and queen of a sitcom prom, as
our hero presents his lady-love with a fluffy pooch as a date-night
present.
The greater the date, the more self-consciously zany the action becomes.
"The typical online demo video is a valuable tool for someone who is
getting close to buying a vehicle and wants to get a closer look at the
specifics," Jason Sperling, executive creative director at RPA, tells
AdFreak. "And up to now, it's all followed a similar formula. By
creating a unique piece of entertaining content that invites deeper
levels of interaction, it makes it more than just a utilitarian tool for
a select few. It makes it memorable, sharable and a worthwhile piece of
content."
The Civic's features are well integrated into the story line, and it's a
hoot to toggle between date variants during product demos. For
instance, when the dude cranks up some tunes via Apple CarPlay on the
"Great" date, he and his companion share a quick smile; on the "Greater"
date, they righteously bop their heads to the beat. And in the
"Greatest" version, a groovy '70s-style sax player appears in the back
seat for a live performance.
Still, we never do make it to the date that tops them all. The
"Greatest" scenario still features a Civic rather than, say, a Ferrari.
(Hey, they could have at least upgraded to an Accord!)
Separately, RPA has also released this year's Happy Honda Days TV
campaign. Five lovely spots were each melded from three layers—live
action, miniature sets and matte paintings. Check out that work below.
IT feels like we've been waiting decades for the new Civic Type R.
Almost as long, in fact, as we've been stamping our feet impatiently for
the new NSX. Tectonic plates move faster than Honda's marketing
department.
The five year hiatus between the old one going off sale in Europe and
the new model arriving is partly explained by the fact that the old
model's high-revving petrol engine couldn't meet increasingly tight EU
emissions regulations. Elsewhere, the last gen Type-R soldiered on until
2012. So we can blame Brussels for some of the delay.
The rest is down to turbocharging. This is the first hot Civic with
forced induction - for so long anathema to the Honda of way of doing
things - a necessary switch if the fastest Type R to date is to meet the
tailpipe rules laid down by Brussels.
ON THE ROAD
When Honda announced the switch to turbocharging some aficionados
wondered if the frenzy of the old Type R's normally-aspirated engine
would be lost. Those fears seem to be confirmed by the new powerplant's
7,000 rpm red line.
But fear not, whether by accident or design, this is the most exciting
Type-R yet. It's a lot more powerful, yes, but that's not why it's such
an adrenaline rush. For that we can thank some good old-fashioned turbo
lag.
At low revs the Civic feels docile, nosing about town like its
hum-drum cousins, but pile on the revs and suddenly things go berserk
with a capital 'b'. The power and torque come flooding in with such
ferocity that, in the lower gears, the front tyres are sometimes
overwhelmed. The low-profile Continental rubber struggles to master all
306 dobbins when they come charging out the stable door in anything less
than perfect road conditions, despite the limited-slip differential's
best efforts.
As if this isn't enough excitement, when the engine enters bonkers
mode the digital dashboard goes all Blackpool illuminations on you,
lights flashing as the LCD rev counter races through its operating
range.
It's a tribute to Honda's chassis engineers that this vicious power
spike doesn't render the Civic completely undriveable - it corners
beautifully - but you do have to hang on to your hat when it happens.
The Type-R transformation takes the already racy-looking hatchback and
adds a bodykit, an enormous rear spoiler, quad exhausts, flared front
wheel arches and smart-looking black alloys with red brake calipers.
That's enough to attract the attention of every policeman within a
half-a-mile. It's also a challenge to every would-be boy racer you come
across.
I was sat waiting for the traffic lights near Sainsbury's, in
Darlington, to go green last week when a bloke in a red Porsche pulled
alongside. He took one look at the Civic and revved his car's engine for
all it was worth in the Max Power reader's equivalent of a glove slap
to the face.
Not being interested in re-creating The Fast 'n' The Furious (it's a
film you duffus), I let Porsche man depart in a screech of tyre smoke.
Presumably, he considered the Civic's brash exterior as a challenge to
his manhood. At least the bodykit performs a useful function beyond
antagonizing other drivers. It channels the air under the floor,
creating a venturi effect which helps suck the car to the road when it's
going fast. Of course, this all happens at the highly illegal speeds
the Civic is capable of - just not in the UK.
ON THE INSIDE
The Civic's interior is as wacky as its exterior - a mixture of
old-school analogue and ultra-modern LCDs on three levels - with added
sporty touches. The aluminium gearknob (a feature of Type-R models ever
since the Integra) feels great, albeit cold enough to freeze your palm
in winter weather, the chunky steering wheel has a red notch so you can
see when it's in the 12 o'clock position and the seatbelts are scarlet
not black.
You sit 30mm lower in the hip-hugging sports seats because there's
less padding and the floor is dropped by 10mm. Very comfortable when you
are in them, the seats make getting in and out more difficult because
your bum has to negotiate the exaggerated side wings that hold you
secure. It's best to go in backside first.
HOW PRACTICAL IS IT?
In its quest for weight saving Honda has dumped the ordinary Civic's
innovative 'magic seats' folding mechanism and the back seats only
accommodate two people, not three. At least it's still possible to fold
the seats down and they split 60/40.
You may not need to do so, however, because the boot is absolutely
massive by dint of the fact there is no spare wheel, just a tyre
inflation gizmo. WHAT YOU GET Two versions are available: the standard
Type R and the GT model which comes with extra kit and satellite
navigation. The infotainment system is the most complex I have come
across: an Android-based systems it links with your phone to access the
internet and download apps. That's fine, but it took me ten minutes of
head scratching looking for the navigation app before I concluded that
it wasn't included.
Cruise control, LED headlights and a reversing camera are all standard.
RUNNING COSTS
It's not cheap to run, especially if you're young or have a less than
perfect speeding points score, but the Type-R is no more - or less fuel
efficient - than key rivals like the Ford Focus or the Seat Leon Cupra. Despite the crackerjack performance and the macho bodykit the British
insurance industry has played fair with the Type-R which inhabits the
same group 33 bracket as the Focus ST and the Leon Cupra - one group
below the Peugeot 308 GTi and the Golf R.
VERDICT
BRUTAL. That's the only way to describe the Civic Type R. Cars like
the Golf R disguise their performance potential but the Honda flaunts it
in your face. The Type R is not so much an iron fist wrapped in a
velvet glove as an iron fist wearing a knuckle duster. Whether that's a
good thing or not probably depends on how old you are, but one thing's
for sure: there's nothing restrained about the way it goes.

Testing
an off-road vehicle for the first time is both a stressful and
rewarding experience. Just a week before the most legendary race in
off-road racing, the Honda Off-Road team travelled to Barstow, CA to
shakedown the new Honda Unlimited Ridgeline Race Truck that will conquer
the 2015 Baja 1000 on November 20th.
Racing machine previews second-generation Honda Ridgeline
Developed by Honda as a preview to the introduction of the new,
second-generation Honda Ridgeline, the driving trio of Jeff Proctor,
Sage Marie and Jason LaFortune piloted their Ridgeline Baja Race Truck
to the Class 2 victory in this weekend's 48th running of the SCORE Baja
1000.
Built jointly by Honda Performance Development, the North American
motorsports arm of American Honda, and the Proctor Racing Group, the
tube-frame Unlimited Class 2 off-road Ridgeline Baja Race Truck made its
competition debut at the brutal Baja event, which this year consisted
of an 821-mile loop that started and finished in Ensenada, Mexico.
Less than half of the 239-competitor starting field finished this
year's Baja event, as limited visibility due to fog and dust added to
the usual challenges of high-speed desert crossings, technical, rocky
mountain trails, silt beds, washes, ditches and jumps throughout the
course.
Despite the obstacles and high attrition, the Ridgeline Baja Race
Truck ran trouble-free, completing the event in 25 hours, nine minutes
and 47 seconds.
"The course was extremely tough today, and it seemed like Baja threw
everything it could at us, but the Ridgeline ran flawlessly all day,"
said Proctor, driver and owner of Proctor Racing Group. "We couldn't be
happier with how it performed on its maiden voyage."
Powered by a twin-turbocharged V6 produced by HPD, the Ridgeline Baja
Race Truck features a body designed by Honda R&D Americas' Los
Angeles Design Studio, with inspiration taken from the next-generation
Honda Ridgeline, also being designed and developed by Honda R&D
North America. Key design cues drawn from the 2017 Honda Ridgeline can
be seen in the front fascia, hood, roof, bed and side profile.
Making approximately 550 horsepower, HPD's 3.5-liter HR35TT engine
uses the same block, cylinder heads and crankshaft as the production V6
engine that will power the all-new Ridgeline. Additional, custom
elements of the powertrain include an HPD-designed intake plenum and
custom Engine Control Unit programming.
Honda Ridgeline Honda will introduce an all-new
second-generation Ridgeline truck in the first half of 2016. Honda
introduced the first-generation Ridgeline in 2005 as a 2006 model. The
Ridgeline challenged conventional thinking in pickup truck design with
its boxed frame uni-body design, offering superior driving dynamics,
fuel efficiency and interior space, in combination with midsize pickup
towing, hauling and off-road capabilities. It also introduced several
industry-first features including a dual-action tailgate and lockable
In-Bed Trunk. The Ridgeline captured both the 2006 North American Truck
of the Year and Motor Trend 2008 Truck of the Year and led all other midsize pickups in J.D. Power's APEAL study for three consecutive years.
Like the original, the next-generation Ridgeline is being designed
and developed by Honda Manufacturing of Alabama in Lincoln, Alabama. The
new Ridgeline will join an expanded lineup of Honda light trucks that
includes the subcompact all-new 2016 HR-V crossover, the ever-popular
Honda CR-V, America's best-selling SUV, and the redesigned 2016 Honda
Pilot, in contention for the 2016 North American Truck of the Year
award. The Ridgeline will be followed by the launch of a completely
redesigned Odyssey minivan in the second half of next year. All Honda
light trucks are manufactured in North America, and all but the HR-V are
produced exclusively in the U.S. at Honda's plants in Ohio and Alabama,
using domestic and globally sourced parts.
Honda Baja Racing History Honda has a long
history of motorcycle race success at Baja, scoring two dozen victories,
including 17 consecutive wins in the SCORE Baja 1000 through 2013.
Honda entered four-wheeled SCORE competition on the Baja peninsula in
2005, competing in the Stock Mini class with a Honda Ridgeline fielded
by Clive Skilton and his California Race and Rally (CaRR) organization.
Driver Gavin Skilton and the Ridgeline scored their first SCORE Baja
1000 class victory in 2008, while Gavin and co-driver Andy Grider
claimed a second Stock Mini class win in the 2010 SCORE Baja 1000. Both
of these class victories came in partnership with HPD. Moving up to the
Class Six Trophy Truck category in 2012 with a tube-framed HPD Desert
Pilot developed jointly by HPD and CaRR, Skilton won the category in the
Score Baja 500 in June, then partnered with brother Darren Skilton to
finish third in that year's SCORE Baja 1000.
Honda Performance Development HPD was founded in
1993 to spearhead Honda's entry into Indy car racing. No other
manufacturer has matched Honda's success in Indy cars, which includes
212 race victories, 15 drivers' championships, six manufacturers'
championships and 10 Indianapolis 500 victories, including the 2014
event, won by Ryan Hunter-Reay of Andretti Autosport.
HPD's prototype racing efforts have resulted in more than 70
victories and multiple American Le Mans Series championships. The
company's sports-car racing debut in 2007 at the 12 Hours of Sebring
marked the first win for HPD's LM-V8 engine and the first for a Honda
racing engine designed and developed outside of Japan.
HPD won the LMP2 title in the inaugural 2012 World Endurance
Championship and has twice won the LMP2 category at the 24 Hours of Le
Mans since 2010.
HPD offers a complete line of race engines for cars from grass roots
to pinnacle; for professional, amateur and entry-level racers. For more

A presentation screenshot is showing the new Honda Civic will get a manual transmission for its turbo version.
CivicX forums obtained information and a presentation
screenshot from Honda parts manufacturer that reveal the 1.5 turbo model
will receive a 6-speed manual transmission for the 2017 MY. Currently,
the Civic 1.5 turbo comes only with an “unique CVT.”
The screenshot also suggests the 6-speed manual, also available on
the base LX model, has been planned for the 1.5 turbo engine for 2016
MY, but has since been delayed to 2017 MY for unknown reasons.
According to the information, the turbo variant will get the manual
after the 2016 Civic Coupe launches in March 2016 and may coincide with
the debut of the 2017 Civic Si model.
The 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder motor is pushing out 174 bhp (129 kW) and 162 lb-ft (219 Nm) of torque. A poster during the Orange County International Auto Show revealed the unit will return 42 mpg US on the highway.
The base unit for the new Civic is
a 2.0-liter four-cylinder naturally aspirated engine, developing 158
bhp (117 kW) and 138 lb-ft (186 Nm) of torque. It is mated to either a
six-speed manual or a continuously variable transmission and returns
"more than 40 mpg" US on the highway.
Honda stopped production of its original Ridgeline pickup truck last
year but a successor is on the way. Development is almost complete, with
our latest spy shots showing one of the final prototypes. The mid-size
truck is expected to debut early next year, as a 2017 model.
Honda first announced its new Ridgeline at the 2015 Chicago Auto Show, where the automaker released a single teaser sketch of the truck. Then, at this month’s SEMA show, Honda presented the Ridgeline Desert Race Truck—an off-road racer whose body shell was based on the design of the new Ridgeline.
The new Ridgeline sports a similar profile to the original, albeit
with the heavily buttressed elements surrounding the tray absent. The
crew cab configuration and C-pillar shape of the new Ridgeline are also
common to the original.
The truck will share underpinnings with the recently revealed Pilot,
which should bring significant weight savings. For example, the new
Pilot is roughly 300 pounds lighter than the previous model. Also
borrowed from the Pilot will be a 3.5-liter V-6 and four-wheel-drive
system.
When might we see the covers finally come off? A debut at either the
Detroit Auto Show next January or the Chicago Auto Show the following
month is likely. Rivals include the Chevrolet Colorado/GMC Canyon twins
as well as the Nissan Frontier and Toyota Tacoma. Note, Ford Motor
Company [NYSE:F] is also set to join the fray with a new Ranger around 2018.
Honda will be impossible for rival Formula 1 engine manufacturers to
copy if its "unique" power unit ideas pay off, reckons McLaren driver
Fernando Alonso.
The Japanese firm has endured a torrid return to
F1 with McLaren this year, racking up a string of failures and generally
being mired in the lower midfield.
It has deliberately avoided
hiring experienced engineers from established F1 manufacturers and
focused on its own homegrown team at Sakura in Japan.
Asked if he
thought this was a weakness that left Honda isolated, Alonso said he was
certain Honda's distinctive thinking would ultimately prove
advantageous.
"It can be a weakness or it can be the winning formula," he said.
"I choose to believe this is the winning formula.
"If you want to copy what Mercedes do, you can be close to Mercedes but you cannot ever be better than Mercedes.
"Being
there in another culture, with another discipline and another ethic of
work has maybe been difficult this year because some of the process has
been slower than what it could be, but I think some of the ideas we have
are very unique in the paddock.
"If we make them work, it will be difficult for anyone else to copy."
McLaren
also took a divergent technical path, though Alonso admitted recently
that there were areas where falling into line with rivals would probably
be beneficial.
He
does not think the team's much-trumpeted 'size zero' aerodynamic
philosophy of tight power unit packaging will be a long-term drawback,
saying the concept only proved problematic this year because "the power
unit was not ready to compete at the top level this year".
The
2005/06 world champion is adamant the McLaren car itself is a
competitive proposition and the only "question mark" is over winter
engine development.
"We have everything," Alonso said.
"The
car is responding well, aerodynamically we have the direction to go in,
we are improving and I see when I am on the track how we attack the
corners and how fast we are in the corners.
"So I am not afraid that next year's car will not be at the top level."

for the first time in the U.S., the radical new Civic Type-R.
Civic Coupe Styling The 2016 Civic Coupe carries
forward the sporty and premium character of the 10th-generation Civic
design, including the bold front fascia, fast-back profile and
sharp-edged detailing, as well as its more athletic wheels out
proportions – its longer wheelbase (+2.9 inches), wider body (+1.9
inches), shortened front overhang (-1.4 inches) and wider stance. The
new Coupe also benefits from the lower seating position, or hip point,
of the new Civic platform, which amplifies the Coupe's low, wide and
planted dynamic driving character.
From the A-pillars rearward, the Coupe features unique exterior
styling with a lower and more steeply raked roofline, nearly 1 inch
lower than the Sedan, and more compact proportions, with the rear
overhang and overall length shortened by 5.5 inches. The new Coupe also
features an exclusive rear taillight design that carries the arch of
the distinctive C-shaped LED taillights across the full length of the
rear deck lid.
Sporty and Spacious Coupe Interior The 2016
Civic Coupe's sportier design does not come at the expense of passenger
comfort, as interior space grows by 8.4 cubic feet and rear seat legroom
is increased by more than 5 inches, compared to the outgoing Coupe
model. The new Civic Coupe interior strikes a more premium tone with
high-quality materials and high-contrast finishes. These include a new
one-piece, soft-touch instrument panel with molded stitching; more
premium seat fabrics; a new full-color TFT center meter (EX and above
trims); door inserts with real stitching; an LED shift indicator and LED
overhead lighting; and for EX and higher trims, a leather shift lever
boot.
Civic Coupe Feature Upgrades All new Civic
Coupes, from the well-equipped LX to the new line-topping Touring,
feature upgraded interiors and an expanded list of standard and
available technologies and features. New standard equipment includes
auto on/off headlights, LED daytime running lights, LED taillights,
acoustic glass windshield, automatic climate control (dual-zone in upper
trims), Electric Parking Brake with Brake Hold and Walk-Away auto door
locks. New available features include Honda LED headlights, Remote
engine start, heated front seats and side mirrors, rain-sensing wipers,
full-color TFT center meter and seven-inch Display Audio touchscreen.
Civic Coupe Audio and Connectivity The new Civic
Coupe delivers the latest in audio and connected-car technology,
including more powerful audio systems; an available new Android
OS-based, 7-inch Display Audio touch screen interface; a bevy of
streaming audio options such as Pandora®, SiriusXM® and HD Radio™; and
for trims with Display Audio, full compatibility with both Android Auto™
and Apple CarPlay® platforms. The Civic Coupe highest trims will also
feature a new Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System™ developed in
cooperation with the experts at Garmin.
Advanced New Powertrains The 2016 Civic Coupe
will launch with two more powerful and fuel-efficient powertrains, Lower
trims receive a new 2.0-liter DOHC i-VTEC™ engine turning out 158 horsepower and 138 lb.-ft. of torque1 (+15 HP and +9 lb.-ft. vs. 2015 Civic 1.8L) with anticipated EPA fuel-economy ratings of 31/41/35 mpg2
(city/highway/combined) for models equipped with CVT. This engine can
also be equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission on the lowest trim.
Civic Coupe mid to highest trims are powered by a new 1.5-liter DOHC
direct-injected TURBO – the first-ever turbocharged engine for Civic
Coupe – putting out a peak 174 horsepower and 162 lb.-ft. of torque3 (+31 HP and +33 lb.-ft. vs. 2015 Civic 1.8L) with anticipated EPA ratings of 31/42/35 mpg2.
Advanced Safety Performance The 2016 Civic Coupe
utilizes Honda's next generation Advanced Compatibility Body Structure™
(ACE™) working in conjunction with advanced airbags and seatbelts to
provide a high degree of safety performance. Utilizing these systems in
conjunction with the available new Honda Sensing™ suite of advanced
safety and driver-assistive technologies, the 2016 Civic Coupe with
Honda Sensing™ targets the highest available U.S. safety ratings – an
NCAP 5-Star Overall Vehicle Score from the National Highway Traffic
Safety Administration (NHTSA) and a TOP SAFETY PICK+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Police waited at the home of a family after someone called in seeing the
parents “put a child in the trunk” of the car — someone who clearly
wasn’t aware that the Tesla Model S can be equipped with a third row of
seats for children.
I stumbled upon this video after comments veteran and Twitter tweeter @_McMike_ tweeted it.
With what little context we have, it seems the family were coming
home from shopping, and startled some good samaritan enough to phone the
cops when they put their child in the back row seating of their Tesla
Model S.
When they arrived home, the cops were waiting to investigate what
sort of dangerous activity was at play when they discovered the
magical-innovative-machine that is the Model S and its nifty rear-facing
third row.
I see why the cops were called, I guess. Putting kids in the trunk is always going to look a little funny.
Also, what a fantastic surveillance set up these people have - we’ve
got audio from the car, video from the car, and video from the house.
They know what’s up.
Glad to see the everyone involved act so calm about it.

Honda today was named “2016 Best SUV Brand” by U.S. News & World Report, tied to the excellent scores earned by the Honda HR-V crossover and CR-V and Pilot SUVs in the U.S. News & World ReportBest Cars Rankings.
“Honda wins the Best SUV Brand award on the strength of its entire
SUV lineup,” said Jamie Page Deaton, Managing Editor, U.S. News Best
Cars. “The HR-V, CR-V and Pilot are all consistently ranked at the top
of their respective classes, as automotive journalists are impressed
with the utility, comfort and family-friendly features that all three
offer. No matter what class SUV shoppers are searching in, Honda has a
model worth considering.”
This accolade comes as Honda continues to strengthen and expand its
light-truck lineup, which began with the launch of the refreshed 2015
CR-V in the fall of 2014, followed by the spring arrival of the all-new
HR-V crossover and summer introduction of a redesigned, third-generation
Pilot. On the strength of these products, Honda is on track for record
results in 2016, with light truck sales reaching a new high of 550,210
units through October, a 13.6 percent gain over year-ago results; with
CR-V on track to earn the title of America’s best-selling SUV for the
4th consecutive year.
“This recognition of Honda as the Best SUV Brand validates our
effort to produce world-class SUVs to meet the needs and desires of
families of any size,” said Jeff Conrad, Senior Vice President and
General Manager, Honda Division. “Honda is committed to providing fuel
efficient, safe and fun products with the quality and reliability to
meet the needs of our discerning customers.”
The awards recognize the brands whose vehicles perform the best on an
overall basis within four major categories of the U.S. News vehicle
rankings: Cars, SUVs, Trucks and Luxury. The Best Vehicle Brands
methodology uses the combined overall scores from the U.S. News Best
Cars rankings across all models in each of the award classes. The
overall rankings score is based on an analysis of published, credible
reviews of a given model from the automotive press, as well as safety
and reliability data.
The 2015 Honda CR-V, with its new direct-injected engine, more
refined interior and first application of Honda Sensing™ safety and
driver-assistive technologies, was named as 2015 Motor Trend
Sport Utility of the Year. The Honda HR-V brought Honda’s packaging
magic to a new and growing market segment, and quickly became the
subcompact SUV segment’s hottest selling model. On the heels of HR-V
came thee redesigned 2016 Pilot, Honda’s flagship SUV, offering more
top-in-class efficiency and safety ratings performance in a sleek new
design.
The CR-V, HR-V and Pilot are all produced exclusively in North
America at Honda’s plants in Lincoln, Alabama (Pilot), East Liberty,
Ohio (CR-V) and Celaya, Mexico
(HR-V). Honda R&D Americas, Inc. is also responsible for
development of the Pilot, Ridgeline and Odyssey models and led
development of the all-new 2016 Civic Sedan and Civic Coupe.

There are two months remaining on the calendar, but
Honda Canada has already generated enough sales activity with its
compact car to establish the Civic as Canada’s best-selling car for an
18th consecutive year.
Not since 1997, when Joe Carter was still at bat for the Blue Jays, has something other than the Honda Civic been Canada’s best-selling car.
Tradition
Of course, the car Honda is selling today isn’t the same as the car
Honda was selling when the streak began in 1998. Back then, the
sixth-generation Civic was available in three bodystyles: sedan,
hatchback, and coupe. Honda made a name for the Civic by building a
reliable car with excellent resale value and appealing on-road dynamics.
Canadians were buying an entry-level car, but Canadians didn’t feel
punished for driving or owning an entry-level car.
Civic volume peaked when the eighth-generation car, with its edgier
styling and two-tier dash, became thoroughly established in 2008, two
years into its run. 72,463 Civics were sold that year in Canada, a figure Honda hasn’t matched since.
In fact, the Civic was not only Canada’s best-selling car in 2008,
it was the country’s best-selling vehicle overall, regardless of
classification, edging out Ford’s F-Series pickups which have taken the crown in every year since.
But while the Civic never matched its 2008 peak in its
ninth-generation form, challengers have still consistently fallen far
short of measuring up to the all-conquering Honda in Canada. The Civic
outsold its nearest rival by 10,000 sales in 2011, by 14,000 sales in
2012, by 9,300 sales in 2013, and by nearly 16,000 sales in 2014.
The Overall Market
Yet there has been a new challenger in 2015 and in the first-quarter
of this year, the Civic was Canada’s top-selling car in just one month:
March. After four years of fending off the second-ranked Hyundai Elantra, 2015’s number-two car is the Toyota Corolla, the Civic’s traditional rival and a global top seller.
The Civic strengthened its position through the middle portion of
the year, however. Now, through the first 10 months of 2015, the Corolla
trails the Civic by 13,673 sales, effectively an insurmountable deficit
for the Toyota to overcome in a declining passenger car market. Indeed,
it is likely that Honda will have sold more Civics through October than
any of its rivals will sell in the full 2015 calendar year.
Still, it hasn’t been an outstanding year for the Civic. The
Canadian auto industry has seen car volume fall by more than five
percent even as the overall market climbs toward another record sales
year. While the Civic isn’t declining as sharply as the car sector as a
whole, it is still down three percent. All of the Civic’s six
best-selling alternatives have seen their sales decline on a
year-over-year basis, as well, from the fourth-ranked Mazda 3’s 16
percent slide to the Corolla’s two percent slide.
The Next Generation
Regardless of what the car market is doing, Honda is pinning high
hopes on its release of an all-new, tenth-generation, model year 2016
Civic this winter.
A more expansive body with greater interior space, new engines, the
eventual debut of a hatchback bodystyle, and a high-performance Type R
option should, at the very least, place the Civic at the forefront of
the Canadian auto industry’s consciousness.
In the transition period, Honda Canada’s volume will also benefit
from the clear-out of ninth-generation cars. For car buyers who don’t
crave the newest and freshest and latest thing, and especially for car
buyers who won’t want to buy a new car in the first year of its
relaunch, now is the time to get into a new Civic.
Made in Canada
Historically speaking, Canadians aren’t only fond of the Civic for
its reputation for reliability, resale, and above-average dynamics.
Honda is a Japanese automaker, but the Civic is built right here in Canada. Alliston, Ontario, is home to production of the Civic and the CR-V, Canada’s third-best-selling utility vehicle.
Can the Honda Civic return to those eighth-generation, pre-recession
highs during a period in which Canadian car buyers are quickly becoming
Canadian crossover buyers? Who knows? But if any car can return to
former glory in Canada, it’s likely the Civic, a nameplate which doesn’t
need the overall market to grow if it can simply steal more sales from
its rivals.
We’ve certainly seen the Civic steal market share in the past.
As it starts to make amends for its diesel-emissions scandal,
Volkswagen of America has announced a Goodwill Package program aimed at
drivers who own one of the diesel cars with cheating software that bypasses emissions testing.
The
Goodwill Package gives affected Volkswagen owners a total of $1,000, in
the form of a $500 Visa gift card that can be spent anywhere, and a
$500 card that can be spent only at Volkswagen dealerships. Owners also
receive three years of Volkswagen's 24-hour roadside assistance program.
To
be eligible, customers must own or lease an affected Volkswagen diesel
model as of November 8, and must not sell the car or end the lease
before they have fully completed the registration program for the
package. Owners must present proof of ownership and various other
documents to their dealership in order to be eligible for the program.
The Volkswagen program affects about 482,000 U.S.-market cars sold with a 2.0-liter turbodiesel engine that has software to "cheat" during EPA emissions testing,
but which is far more polluting in everyday driving. Affected cars
include the 2009-2015 Jetta TDI, 2009-2015 Jetta SportWagen TDI,
2010-2015 Golf TDI, 2012-2015 Beetle TDI, 2012-2014 Passat TDI, and the
2015 Golf SportWagen TDI. Customers can check their car's eligibility at
www.vwdieselinfo.com.
Volkswagen is still developing a recall program
to fix these affected TDI models so they comply with emissions laws,
but the Goodwill program is designed to help appease angry customers.
"We
are working tirelessly to develop an approved remedy for affected
vehicles," Volkswagen of America president and CEO Michael Horn said in a
statement. "In the meantime, we are providing this Goodwill Package as a
first step towards regaining our customers' trust."

Sporty Civic Design The dramatic and sporty new
Civic design is grounded in its more athletic stance and low and wide
proportions. Compared to the current model, the 2016 Civic Sedan is
nearly 2 inches wider and 1 inch lower with a 1.2-inch longer wheelbase,
featuring a more compact and sporty front overhang; a longer, more
aggressively sculpted hood and fastback-style tail.
The taut and tidy proportions of the new Civic Sedan are complemented
and accentuated by refined design details, including sleek and
swept-back bodylines, a sharp and aggressive face and bulging wheel
arches. The new Civic's more premium character is also highlighted by
its available LED exterior lighting, including standard LED running
lights, distinctive C-shaped LED taillights and featuring LED headlights
on the Touring trim.
Two All-New Powertrains The 2016 Civic Sedan
features two all-new, more powerful and fuel-efficient engines: Civic
Sedan LX and EX trims are powered by a 2.0-liter, port-injected DOHC i-VTEC™ inline four-cylinder engine producing 158 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 138 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,200 rpm4(+15
HP and +9 lb.-ft. vs. 2015 Civic 1.8L) and mated to either a six-speed
manual (LX trim only) or continuously variable automatic transmission
(CVT). Civic Sedan EX-T, EX-L and Touring trims are powered by a
1.5-liter, direct-injected DOHC TURBO inline 4-cylinder engine producing
174 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 162 lb.-ft. of torque from 1,800 to
5,500 rpm5(+31 HP and +33 lb.-ft. vs. 2015 Civic 1.8L) and
mated to an all-new CVT with torque converter designed specifically to
complement the turbocharged engine.
Both engines feature a wide array of friction-reducing design and
engineering features that support both high performance and high fuel
efficiency. These two ultra-efficient engines, married to the 2016 Civic
Sedan's highly aerodynamic body, help to garner class-leading EPA
fuel-economy ratings of 31/41/35 mpg (city/highway/combined) for models
equipped with the 2.0-liter engine and CVT, 27/40/31 mpg for the 2.0L
with manual transmission and 31/42/35 mpg for models equipped with the
1.5-liter TURBO.
Advanced and Sporty New Body and Chassis The
2016 Civic sets a new standard for dynamic handling, steering, ride
quality and cabin quietness in the compact class, courtesy of its
all-new platform, featuring the most rigid and tightly sealed body and
the most sophisticated chassis in Civic history.
Advancing the sporty character of this all-new Civic is its more
sporty driving position, with a lower hip point compared to the outgoing
model. The Civic's all-new platform design and lower floor and engine
enable the lower hip point. The new Civic chassis features a redesigned
strut front suspension and a new multi-link rear suspension mounted to
an ultra-rigid rear subframe.
Torsional rigidity of the new body is improved by 25 percent aided in
part by more intensive use of ultra-high-strength steel. Fifty-nine
percent of the unit body is composed of high-strength steel, including
14 percent hot-stamp steel. Aerodynamic efficiency is improved by 12
percent to class-leading levels through detailed CFD modeling, wind
tunnel testing and tuning, and from the use full underbody covers (a
Civic first).
Despite its larger size, the new Civic unit body is 68 pounds lighter
than before, while new body-sealing techniques result in a 58 percent
reduction in cabin air leaks. Class-leading cabin quietness is further
improved by the use of premium noise-reducing features, including a
flush-mounted acoustic glass windshield, a more tightly sealed engine
compartment and triple-sealed doors.
To achieve the Civic development team's high targets for dynamic
performance and refined ride quality, the new Civic Sedan utilizes
hydraulic compliance bushings; a technology typically reserved for more
expensive vehicles, aiding the isolation of road vibration. Additional
new chassis technologies include variable gear-ratio steering, beefier
front and rear stabilizer bars and standard four-wheel disc brakes,
along with the application of new Agile Handling Assist brake-torque
vectoring technology for more precise and agile cornering.
Spacious, Sophisticated and Advanced Cabin The
new Civic interior is designed to offer the most comfortable,
sophisticated and premium-feeling cabin in the compact class. An
additional 3.2 cubic feet of interior space translates into the largest
cabin in the compact segment with 1.2 inches of added rear-seat legroom
versus the outgoing model. In front, new ultra-thin front roof pillars
enable class-leading forward visibility. At the rear, trunk space has
been increased by 2.6 cubic feet a configuration with a lower lift-over
height, larger opening and wider and taller cargo area. Civic Sedan EX
and higher trims will feature a 60/40 split and folding rear seat. All
Civic Sedan models also feature a larger, reconfigurable new center
console with up to 7.2 liters of secure storage space; approaching SUV
levels of console utility.
The new Civic interior strikes a more premium tone with high-quality
materials and high-contrast finishes. These include a new one-piece,
soft-touch instrumental panel with molded stitching; more premium seat
fabrics; a new full-color TFT center meter (EX and above trims); a
center console with piano black finish and high-contrast silver bezel;
door inserts with real stitching; an LED shift indicator and LED
overhead lighting; and for EX and higher trims, a leather shift boot.
The 2016 Civic Sedan offers customers more premium features than ever
before. New standard equipment includes automatic climate control,
auto-up/down front-power windows, an electronic parking brake with Brake
Hold and Walk-Away auto door locks. Additional available premium
features, depending upon trim, include heated side mirrors (EX and
above), remote engine start rain-sensing wipers (Touring), heated front
seats (EXT and above) and heated outboard rear seats (Touring), an
eight-way power driver's seat (EX-L and Touring), a four-way power front
passenger's seat (Touring) and an adjustable driver's seat thigh
support with 14 degrees of tilt.
Civic Audio and Connectivity Civic EX and higher
trims come equipped with a new 7-inch Display Audio touchscreen with a
higher resolution Android-based operating system. The Civic joins the
2016 Accord as two of the first high-volume models in the industry to
incorporate both the Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™
platforms, providing seamless integration of smartphone features and
functions. Smartphone connectivity for the Civic Sedan is now
accomplished using a single USB cable connection.
The new Civic Sedan also delivers on the audio front with more
powerful systems and expanded listening options, including SiriusXM®
Radio, Pandora® compatibility and HD Radio™. Civic LX trims
feature a 160-watt, four-speaker sound system and 5-inch LCD screen for
control of audio functions, while EX and EX-L trims feature a 180-watt
system, eight-speaker system and utilize the new 7-inch Display Audio
touchscreen as the nerve center for audio and climate control. The
new-line-topping Touring trim features a 450-watt, 10-speaker audio
system—the most powerful in its competitive set—integrated with Display
Audio.
Finally, while all Civic models with Display Audio provide for
smartphone-powered GPS navigation via the Apple CarPlay® and Android
Auto™ platforms (with compatible smartphone and customer data
plan), for customers who want an embedded navigation capability, the
Civic EX-L Navi and Touring trims are equipped with an all-new Honda
Satellite-Linked Navigation System™ developed in cooperation
with the experts at Garmin – offering more intuitive operation, improved
graphics and enhanced mapping capabilities.
Civic Safety Performance The 2016 Civic utilizes an advanced body structure – including a next generation Advanced Compatibility Body Structure™ (ACE™),
a high-strength steel floor and tailor-tempered, ultra-high-strength
B-pillars and rear frame rails – to provide a high degree of occupant
protection while minimizing weight and aiding fuel efficiency. The new
body structure works in concert with advanced front-side and side
curtain airbag technology, including SmartVent® technology for the
driver and front passenger side airbags.
Utilizing these systems in conjunction with the new Honda Sensing™
suite of advanced safety and driver-assistive technologies, the 2016
Civic Sedan targets the highest available U.S. safety ratings – an NCAP
5-Star Overall Vehicle Score from the National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration (NHTSA) and a TOP SAFETY PICK+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
