Papercraft Ninjas Print, Build Life-Size Cardboard NSX Race Car

Wow, the time and effort that would have gone into this is incredible.... Epson sounds like a awesome place to work, my papercrafts (airplanes) never get this much press and I'm always told to stop....
Epson employees took advantage of their papercraft skills and giant printers to build an impressively detailed 1:1 cardboard replica of an Acura/Honda NSX Super GT race car. Build photos of what we consider the sexiest recycling project ever.

The papercraft JDM Honda NSX debuted at this year's Tokyo Auto Salon back in January, but it crossed our radar again when Nerdwa pointed out some photos of the incredible construction process.

It's actually quite similar to the normal routing for building a papercraft car, albeit at a gigantic scale. The frame they build for the paper body is especially cool. If you're inspired by this and lack the time/printing capability to pull off a full-sized version, Epson posted a bunch of the 1:24 scale instructions right here.

Carscoop: SPIED: Honda Civic Hatch Prototype with Full Hybrid System Snagged Testing

Only a few weeks after Honda President Takanobu Ito disclosed plans to equip the next generation of the Civic Hybrid with a new high-output and compact in size, lithium-ion battery, and our spies have captured a pair of test mules in the body of the current, European market Civic five-door hatch, testing near the company's R&D center in Offenbach, Germany.

According to our man with the long lens, the two prototype Civics "left the traffic lights in complete silence", which points to a full hybrid set up with the ability to run on electric power only.

The next generation of the Civic is due for release in 2011 or 2012 the latest. Aside from the hybrid model with gasoline-electric technology which could be offered in Europe in both hatchback and sedan forms, Honda has also confirmed the development of a smaller displacement turbo diesel engine that will fit right under the current 2.2-liter i-DTEC unit.

A first: Honda's U.S. output tops Japan's

For the first time in its history, Honda Motor Co. built more vehicles in the United States during the April-June quarter than it did in Japan.

Honda, the first Japanese company to build a car factory in the United States, said its U.S. output totaled 236,819 vehicles in its fiscal first quarter. It produced 236,559 vehicles in Japan in the same period, according to a quarterly production report.

Spokesman David Iida confirmed today that it was the first time that Honda's U.S. vehicle output had exceeded Japan's during a full quarter.

For the first six months of 2010, Honda's Japanese output of 491,024 vehicles surpassed the U.S. total of 480,913 vehicles.

Company officials said Honda has steadily increased its local output, not just in the U.S. but in other regions.

The proportion of Honda vehicles sold in the U.S. that are produced in North America reached 90 percent in the first six months of 2010, Iida said.

In all of North America, Honda's output totaled 322,260 vehicles in the first quarter of the fiscal year begun April 1.

"In the long term, there are more growth opportunities in the United States than there are in Japan," said analyst Jesse Toprak at TrueCar.com in Santa Monica, Calif.

"There's not much growth in Japan, where there's a population decline. In the United States, sales can only get better."

But the fastest growth will occur in emerging markets, he said.

Benefiting from robust sales in the U.S. and Asia, Honda reported strong first-quarter earnings last week. The Tokyo-based automaker reported a steep rise in net profit, to 272.4 billion yen, or $3.2 billion, from 7.5 billion yen, or $81 million, a year ago. It also increased its earnings forecast for the year.

Japan's automakers are profiting from rebounding demand across Asia and in Japan. Honda, the world's leading motorcycle manufacturer, also is benefitting from brisk motorcycle sales in emerging markets.

Honda initially produced motorcycles in the U.S. after building a plant in Marysville, Ohio, in 1979. It began auto production in Ohio three years later.

The New 2011 Nissan Quest--Revealed!!

This would definately be one that will have to grow on me....
In Japan at least...

The 2011 Nissan Quest is not officially supposed to be revealed to the American public until November at the LA Auto Show but the vehicle that it will be rebadged from made its debut in Japan today.

Under the name Elgrand the pictures are near identical to those of the "teaser" shots seen on Nissan USA's official home page of the Quest. I don't think there is any question that this is what the Quest will be when it arrives here next year. The info on the Elgrand/Quest is interesting. It will be available with either a 3.5 VQ35DE or a 2.5 QR25DE engine, will have an optional AWD system and be available in a 7 and 8 passenger configuration.

The Elgrand/Quest will also be available with the "Around View Monitor" system recently seen on the new QX56/Patrol and a host of other gee-whiz systems designed to increase safety and decrease fuel usage.

The Elgrand itself has been available in other markets around the world in various forms for years and this simple rebadging of a vehicle that was being updated anyways is an easy and cost effective way for Nissan to re-enter the Minivan market. Given that Nissan likely doesn't know how this vehicle will be received in the U.S. and is already planning on producing it elsewhere for non-U.S. markets in which the model is already accepted/popular, I would anticipate that it will be built in Japan and shipped here and not produced domestically.

Exact details of the Elgrand can be found here: Elgrand reveal...

The last three pictures below are of the "Quest" from the Nissan USA home page while the first six below are from Nissan Japan in connection with today's reveal of the Elgrand...

Consumer Reports picks best cars for teens and seniors: Honda Accord

Consumer Reports Picks Best Cars for Teens and Seniors
Honda Accord is the right fit for the young, old, tall and small

YONKERS, N.Y., Aug. 3 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- With the fall semester just around the corner, Consumer Reports offers its best choices for parents and teens out shopping for a car to bring back to school.

When looking for the right car for teens, including used models, Consumer Reports recommends picking cars with safety features such as electronic stability control and curtain air bags and good crash-test results.

"Often parents think that putting their child in the biggest car is the safest thing they can do, but that's not so. Teens are the most inexperienced drivers on the road, so you want to make sure they're driving something that handles well, is agile and has as many safety features as possible--especially electronic stability control," said David Champion, senior director of Consumer Reports Automotive Test Center in East Haddam, Connecticut.

In addition to naming good cars for young and older drivers, Consumer Reports also names good picks for all sizes and types of drivers including the tall and small. All the models on Consumer Reports' lists have at least average reliability and are Recommended vehicles. Consumer Reports named only one car suitable for all four driver types: the Honda Accord.

"When it comes to finding the right cars for seniors, we recommend vehicles that offer easy access, good visibility, a roomy driving position and comfortable seats," Champion added.

Here is a look at some of Consumer Reports' picks for teens and seniors:

2010 Honda Odyssey gets its #1 Rating back

If I remember correctly this happened in 2004 as well, where the out going Odyssey was given the nod at top spot, if this isn't a testament to how advanced Honda makes their models when they first come out I don't know what is (I am thinking that this is the very reason for the Civic delay)....
Drivers who need to carry more than five people can choose from models of various types and sizes. There are conventional minivans, three-row SUVs, and so-called microvans, each with their own pros and cons. For this issue, we tested a new or recently updated model from each group. The results might be surprising.

Overall we were most impressed with the Mazda5 (available to subscribers) microvan, which scored an excellent 95 in our testing and earned a Top Pick in our April issue in the Family Hauler category. Despite its modest size, it is versatile and relatively roomy, with sliding rear doors, a small third-row seat, and seating for up to six. It also gets better gas mileage and is more agile and fun to drive than larger alternatives. A 2010 upgrade brought standard ESC.

If you need more room, especially in the third row, a minivan is a better choice. But while the redesigned Toyota Sienna (available to subscribers) is a very good vehicle, it doesn't measure up to the previous model, which had been our top-rated minivan for three years. The Sienna is still roomy and fuel efficient and has a smooth ride, but a drop in interior fit and finish and quietness, among other things, contributed to a drop in its overall test score from 93 to only 80 for the redesign (I didn't see this coming....). The Sienna remains the only minivan offering all-wheel drive, but that version also dropped in its test score for the same reasons. The six-year-old Honda Odyssey now leads the category. A resigned Odyssey is due out this fall.

Rounding out our group is the Ford Flex EcoBoost SUV (available to subscribers). The Flex employs the EcoBoost engine's turbocharging and direct fuel injection technology to optimize performance and fuel economy. That improvement boosted this version of the Flex to the top of its category, below only the Toyota Highlander Hybrid. While its boxy shape may not appeal to everyone, it helps give the Flex a very roomy and versatile interior with seating for up to seven. And like all car-based SUVs, the Flex is available with all-wheel drive.

Prices for the vehicles in this test group varied greatly: from $23,805 for the small Mazda5 to $46,720 for the Flex.

Only the Mazda5 is recommended. The Toyota Sienna and the Flex EcoBoost are too new for us to have reliability data.

Honda tweaks Odyssey production process at Alabama plant

Honda's Alabama factory will begin mass production of the redesigned Odyssey minivan in about four weeks, a company executive said Monday during an auto industry event in Michigan.

The production version of the Odyssey, which has been updated for the 2011 model year, made its debut in June during a dealer meeting in Denver.

The new vehicle has a sleeker shape than its predecessor, along with more space for passengers and cargo and new twists on storage compartments.

The latest Odyssey also is bringing changes to Honda's production processes, Mike Oatridge, vice president of manufacturing at the Lincoln plant, said during the Center for Automotive Research's Management Briefing Seminars in Traverse City, Mich.

For instance, during past model changes, employees would begin writing operations standards after the first prototypes were built. This time, they were written before then, allowing workers to make a vehicle geared to their actual process flow and not a hypothetical concept.

Specific assembly steps changed, too, to improve ergonomics and cut waste. On the current Odyssey, for example, employees use a rubber mallet to ensure the rear quarter glass is fitted properly, but for building the new minivan, there's an attachment clip that makes that task easier.

Elsewhere, new larger parts have been moved to a supplier for subassembly, eliminating the need for employees to do overhead work. Lift-assist devices also were added on the Lincoln assembly lines.

The Alabama plant was involved in the earliest stages of the new Odyssey's development, Oatridge said, with several manufacturing workers embedded in a Honda research and development center in Ohio.

"This was a year before they issued their first drawings, which provided the chance to learn about the conceptual ideas for the new product and how it would impact the plant," Oatridge said in his speech, which was provided by Honda.

He also outlined the plant's response to the industry's deep sales slump in 2008 and 2009, which forced output to be slashed and production to be idled on more than 65 days.

During that time, Honda shifted production of the Ridgeline pickup from Canada to Alabama. The move kept Alabama workers busy while they continued to build the slow-selling Odyssey and Pilot SUVs, and it freed up more space in Canada to build the better-selling Civic.

Honda also shifted production of the V-6 Accord sedan from Ohio to Alabama, allowing more 4-cylinders Accords to be built in Ohio.

Sales of the Alabama-made vehicles have been improving along with the rest of the industry, prompting overtime in Lincoln.

But there's a lot riding on the new Odyssey, which will compete with Toyota's redesigned Sienna minivan, launched earlier this year.

The new Odyssey will arrive on dealer lots this fall.
