A recall for approximately 344,000 2007-2008 Honda Odyssey minivans is being issued for a problem with those vehicles’ Vehicle Stability Assist system (VSA) which can result in sudden, hard braking without the driver depressing the brake pedal, and without the rear brake lights illuminating. The culprit is the vehicle yaw sensor. The yaw sensor may not properly reset itself after being driven under certain conditions, resulting in the sudden release of pressure into the system, increasing the risk of a crash. Honda claims it is not aware of any crashes or injuries as a result of the VSA malfunction.
Due to the number of units subject to the recall, a sufficient supply of replacement parts will not be available until spring 2014. In the meantime, owners will receive an initial recall notice, and instructions on how to ensure proper VSA calibration to prevent potential unintended braking. When the replacement parts become available, affected owners will receive a second notice of parts availability and to take their vehicle to a Honda dealer for repair.
