The new Honda Civic Type R is here

by Ben Griffin of www.recombu.com

Geneva Motor Show: The brand new Honda Civic Type R has been officially announced, along with a plethora of photos and details of just how fast the thing is. Hint: Very.

Honda has called the new Civic Type R a 'race car for the road'. A 310PS 2.0-litre VTEC engine that develops 400Nm, 0 to 62mph time of 5.7 seconds and a top speed of 167mph help it live up to the claim. It is, in fact, the most powerful engine to bear the red H badge in all 22 years of history.

High-revving VTEC fans will appreciate peak power is achieved at 6,500rpm, 500rpm shy of the redline. But full torque kicks in at 2,500rpm so it should kick hard even if you fluff your gears. You can partly thank a new 'advanced' turbocharger for that.

To keep things old-school, the new Type R is fitted with a six-speed manual gearbox. It also has a rear spoiler that helps improve road-holding without adding too much drag at speed, which is the good news. The bad news is the design is much more tame compared with the Type R Concept.

A wide front splitter and deep side skirts help reduce lift and improve aerodynamics, while enlarged upper and lower grilles in the front bumper keep the engine temperature down.

Tyres designed specifically for the Type R by an unknown third-party come wrapped around 19-inch alloys, while four-pistol calipers and 350mm discs at the front do their best to reign in the fun.

One of the biggest talking points is the '+R' button that turns the car from being civilised to a savage, drooling beast. Press it and the engine responsiveness is heightened, the damping force increased by 30 per cent and the steering gets less power assistance for a more aggressive drive.

The usual Championship White joins four other optional paintjobs: Crystal Black (pearlescent), Polished Metal (metallic), Brilliant Sporty Blue (metallic) and Milano red (metallic).

Buyers will be able to spec a GT Pack for extra money. Doing so gets you signature red highlights on the front and rear splitters, front and rear parking sensors, automatic headlights, automatic wipers, electric door mirrors and a 320-watt stereo upgrade.

Navigation with four years of free updates (courtesy of Garmin), Fordward Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning, Traffic Sign Recognition, High-Beam Support, Blind Spot information and Cross Traffic Monitor systems are also included in the pack. City-Brake is standard.

Such is Honda's faith in the new Type R, it took a development car said to mimic the production version (minus a rollcage and a few other tweaks to compensate) around the Nurburgring and set a time faster than the Megane Renaultsport 275 Trophy-R and the Seat Leon Cupra 280.

Full UK price and vehicle specifications will be given out 'in due course' ahead of its launch in the summer. Watch the Nurburgring lap here.

Update: Honda has announced a UK price of £29,995 and £2,300 for the GT Pack.

World Car Fans: Honda Civic Type R spied up close undisguised

A WCF reader has sent us very revealing images of the production-spec Honda Civic Type R.

It was only several hours ago when we posted an image with the car partially hidden under a cover and now the wraps are off and we get to take a closer look at the much awaited hot hatchback. As expected, it doesn’t look as radical as the concepts but nevertheless it has all the ingredients you would want from a high-powered hatch such as the wide body with a prominent wing, a prominent diffuser, muscular wheel arches and a quad exhaust system.

It rides on 19-inch glossy black alloy wheels with red accents matching the brake calipers which on the front axle work with Brembo 350mm drilled discs. Underneath the hood is a four-cylinder 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine rated at more than 280 HP (206 kW) which will be enough for a top speed of 167 mph (270 km/h).

The Honda Civic Type R will premiere on March 3 at the Geneva Motor Show but a full online reveal could occur this weekend.

Special thanks go to WCF user DTM for sending us the pics!

New Honda Civic Type R to boast 167mph top speed!

by Tim Pollard of www.carmagazine.co.uk

► 2015 Honda Civic Type R to top 167mph
► Extraordinary top end for a hot hatch
► But still no full pictures!
Honda has confirmed an extraordinary 167mph top speed (270kph) for 2015’s new Civic Type R, claiming the aerodynamic package lets it go faster than any other front-wheel drive hot hatch.

The Japanese claim unusually good high-speed stability and downforce thanks to a virtually flat underside, a ground-hugging rear diffuser and that monster rear wing already seen on the Civic Type R concepts.

All combine to squash the hot Honda into the road where most GTIs would be skittering around and running out of puff. It should be quite the autobahn-stormer this Civic…

So how powerful is the new 167mph Honda Civic Type R?

Ah details, details… no word yet on the total power output from the 2.0-litre VTEC turbocharged engine. But CAR understands maximum power is likely to top 300bhp, possibly by some margin judging by that top speed claim.

A first look inside the Civic’s cabin shows a rev counter redlined at 7000rpm, which should relieve doubters fearing that the arrival of turbochargers would stymie the Type R’s hitherto barmy top end. Still, we won’t know until we drive the hot hatch in summer 2015.

Happily, there are strong Brembo brakes to wipe off all that speed, visible in these teaser photos. Honda says 350mm drilled discs are used, grabbed by four-piston calipers.

What else do we know about the 2015 Type R?

A trio of pictures released today show some pretty serious-looking front spoilers and splitters, side skirts and 235/35 ZR19 Continental tyres wrapped around 10-spoke alloys.

The brakes, and 2.0-litre turbo four, all require some serious cooling, and Honda says that grilles, bumpers and wheelarches have all been sculpted accordingly to ease the exit of hot air. Just a shame they haven’t shown all these changes yet…

See the new Honda Civic Type R in its launch colour of Championship White at the 2015 Geneva motor show on 3 March. We’ll have the full photos and details the moment they’re released.

2015 Honda Civic Type R goes up for order in the U.K.

Buyers will need a 3000 GBP deposit

Honda has announced plans to begin accepting orders for the highly-anticipated 2015 Civic Type R.

While the company hasn't even shown off the production model, Honda will begin accepting pre-orders in the United Kingdom. In order to reserve your spot, you simply have to head down to your local Honda dealer and place a £3,000 ($4,725 / €3,780) deposit.

The company didn't have much to say about the production model but it will closely echo the Civic Type R concept that debuted at the Paris Motor Show earlier this year. As a result, the car will come equipped with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces more than 280 PS (206 kW) and promises to "deliver unmatched performance compared to any previous Type R car" including the "Integra, Accord and even the NSX."

World Car Fans: 2015 Honda Civic Type R spied hiding production body at the Nurburgring

Promising to be better than the NSX

The 2015 Honda Civic Type R has been spied undergoing final testing in Germany around the Nürburgring.
These days at the Paris Motor Show you can check out Honda's updated Civic Type R concept which serves as a preview for the production model. Scheduled to go on sale in 2015, the hot hatchback will look slightly toned down than the concept and probably won't incorporate the taillights in the rear wing while the body will look a bit less aggressive.

Styling aside, Honda has used some big words when talking about the Civic Type R as they say it will be better than all previous Type R models, including the iconic NSX. It's a known fact the vehicle will adopt a front-wheel drive layout with power coming from an i-VTEC 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged gasoline engine developing more than 280 HP (206 kW) and revving up to 7,000 rpm.

Top Gear: Honda head: “I’d love a new NSX Type R”

Chief engineering Hisayuki Yaki tells TG he wants a hotter version of Honda’s upcoming sports car

by Vijay Pattni of www.topgear.com

“We had a Type R with the first generation, so yes, personally, I’d love to see a new NSX Type R.”

That, internet, is about as much as we know about the possibility of a harder, more extreme version of the upcoming Honda NSX appearing on our horizon.

Speaking at the Paris Motor Show, Hisayuki Yagi, chief engineer at the Japanese carmaker, confirmed that he wanted a hotter version of the V6 hybrid sports car follow the launch of the NSX, which hopefully arrives next year. “I’m a big fan of all the Type Rs,” he told TG.com. “The Civic, Integra, Accord, all of them, so I would very much welcome an NSX Type R.”

In the meantime, we’ve got the new Civic Type R (above) to tussle with. A car packing at least 276bhp – some have suggested more – through its no doubt petrified front wheels.

“If you stay within your capable limits, then probably the output [276bhp] is too much for a FWD car,” Yagi-san told us. “But to go beyond your limits, that involves new technology and innovation. With our skills, we can definitely cope with this high output.”

It’s some output, vastly eclipsing the last Type R’s 2.0-litre engine. And this time, for the first time in a Honda hot hatch, we get a turbo. “We were limited in engine size,” Yagi-san said, “so in order to achieve our set targets for performance, a turbo was the most suitable technology.

“But it’s just a tool. If we were in a different era, it would have been a different technology,” he said. “We’ve also put a lot of weight-reducing technology in the Type R. It’s very usual at Honda were we set performance targets that seem unreachable.”

The Civic Type R will be knocking on the door of Golf R power – a car that employs 4WD to devastating effect. Did Honda, TG asks Yagi-san, ever consider the same solution? “During the planning and concept phase, we considered a four-wheel-drive system and automatic gearbox, but we settled on FWD, and that was that.”

So how, to not put too fine a point on it, is this Civic supposed to deal with so much brute force through two driven wheels? “We have a control mechanism using an adaptive damper on all four struts, in order to control body movement,” says Yagi-san. “It distributes the drive force on the wheels, managing the centre of gravity over any given driving situation.”

A driving situation like, say, the Nurburgring? Yagi-san smiles. He knows what we mean. The Seat Leon and Renault Megane have laid down the gauntlet. “The Nurburgring is just a measure, a tool to confirm and validate how quick you are.”

And how quick is this new Civic Type R. Under eight minutes quick? Again, another smile from Yagi-san. “We are targeting a value around the Nurburgring that exceeds customer expectation…”

Game on, we’d say.

Honda Civic Type R concept powers into Paris with at least 280 HP

Production verison due in 2015

Honda has unveiled today at Paris Motor Show an updated variant of the near-production Civic Type R concept.

Until next year's final product, we can feast our eyes on an updated concept of the Honda Civic Type R which features a very aggressive body kit with muscular wheel arches, large side skirts and a big diffuser. It also packs a quad exhaust arrangement and has a spectacular rear wing incorporating the taillights and the third brake light.

Honda is aiming to take down the front-wheel drive record on the Nürburgring and promises the 2015 Civic Type R will be better than the legendary NSX and is going to offer a "sensational driving experience." It will have a four-cylinder 2.0-liter i-VTEC engine revving up to 7,000 rpm and delivering more than 280 HP (206 kW). Honda's engineers will be fixing any potential torque steer issues by implementing a "steer axis" system granting improved traction while the front suspension will receive two additional supporting "kingpins."

Moreover, the 2015 Honda Civic Type R is going to come with a newly developed four-point Adaptive Damper System that will automatically adjust front & rear suspension damping force stiffness "in a split second" depending on the driving conditions.

A full reveal will likely occur in March 2015 at the Geneva Motor Show.

Honda: New Civic faster than NSX

Honda will display its Civic Type-R Concept at the Paris Motor Show, this time in a vivid shade of blue
by David McCowen of www.driving.com.au

Honda has set the stage for a hot hatch war with a new Civic Type R that could be the brand's fastest-ever car.

The Japanese manufacturer has unveiled a thinly disguised production version of its new Civic Type R ahead of the Paris motor show, where a revised hatch that appears to be production-ready will go on public display.

The brand says its new machine "will deliver unmatched performance compared to any previous Type R car... even the NSX".

Honda research and development executive Suehiro Hasshi says the car's turbocharged engine will produce more power than previous Type-R versions of the Civic, Integra, Accord and NSX.

The latter was Honda's foray into the world of supercars and was powered by a mid-mounted V6 making 206kW of grunt, which the Civic is expected to comfortably exceed.

Honda says the car will only be available with a six-speed manual transmission, allowing drivers more control than an automatic or dual-clutch transmission.
Honda says the hot Civic will be faster than its highly-regarded NSX supercar. Honda says the hot Civic will be faster than its highly-regarded NSX supercar.

It also have adjustable shock absorbers similar to the system fitted on Volkswagen's seventh-generation Golf GTI, along with 'steer axis', a mechanical system used to reduce torque steer in a similar way to the RevoKnuckle device used on Ford's Focus RS.

Honda hopes that its new Type R will be the fastest front-wheel-drive car to lap the Nurburgring. To do that, it must beat the 7:54.36 benchmark held by Renault's Megane R.S. 275 Trophy R, a hardcore special-edition machine with weight-saving measures that extend to the removal of its radio and airconditioning.

The Civic Type-R won't be Honda's fastest model for long though with an all-new NSX supercar set to go on sale by 2016.

AutoExpress: New Honda Civic Type-R concept meets its fans

Honda Type R fans from around Europe converged on Belgium’s Spa race track to get up close and personal with honda’s new hot Civic.

The death of the Honda Civic Type R four years ago epitomised Tokyo’s drift away from the fast, furious and fun hot hatch.

During its time, Honda’s hero overcame criticism of its crashy ride quality and power deficit to other hot hatches, until EU emissions legislation forced the brand to wield the axe.

The Type R was Honda’s last true performance car, and when it left the range it took plenty of credibility with it.

To get your head around how frustrating it is for Honda fans that the company no longer sells a model with an R stamped on its rev-hungry engine, you just have to talk to existing Type R owners.

Honda Civic Type R Concept. Warning! R-Rated Content

Goes on sale next year

Honda is gearing up for the launch of the 2015 Civic Type R by releasing a new teaser campaign that will attempt to build hype for the upcoming model.

While the video only shows the concept, Honda says the production model will have "bold and aggressive styling reflecting the strong performance characteristics for which the marque is renowned." Honda UK's Head of Marketing, Olivia Dunn, went on to say "The new Type R promises to be the most extreme yet, it's born from racing and it pushes the boundaries. This new campaign encompasses this spirit perfectly, with Disruption the ideal curtain raiser in setting the energy and adrenaline levels very high."

As we have previously reported, the Civic Type R will go on sale next year and Honda has already confirmed it will feature a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine that develops at least 280 HP (206 kW).

Civic Type-R teaser 2014 - The other side of Honda

The Japanese based automaker Honda has released a new teaser video with the upcoming Civic Type R, which will be officially unveiled later on this year.

The 2015 Honda Civic is ending up in our news once again, after being caught on camera by our spy photographers a couple of weeks ago, this time with the help of a new teaser video, which is showing it revving its engine and coming to life from underneath the body of the regular hatchback. The brand new Honda Civic has some big goals which include becoming the fastest front-wheel drive car to ever lap the Nurburgring, stealing the “crown” from the current Seat Leon Cupra or from the Renault Megane 275 Trophy.

In terms of looks, the 2015 Honda Civic Type R will be very similar to the Civic Type R Concept unveiled three months ago, during the 2014 Geneva Motor Show, but it will be getting some enhanced aerodynamics and a full body kit with a large spoiler, with low side skirts and a front splitter. Rumors are saying that this will be taking its power from the new 2.0 liter turbocharged “Earth Dreams” four-cylinder engine, which could produce approximately 280 HP. Chances are we will see the new Civic Type this October, during the 2014 Paris Motor Show.

2015 Honda Civic Type R Spied Testing Against A45 AMG

Honda is continuing tests of its long-awaited 2015 Honda Civic Type R and the latest spy shots show it being benchmarked against the potent Mercedes-Benz A 45 AMG.

While this prototype is wearing absolutely no camouflage, this doesn’t mean the final design will be identical to this test car. As a matter of fact, Honda unveiled the Type R Concept at the Geneva Motor Show featuring a host of aggressive styling changes.
Visually, the Honda Civic Type R Concept is about as aggressive as a hot hatch can be. At the front, it features the same standard design as the standard Honda Civic, however, includes brand new LED headlights, a black panel below the front grille as well as a large splitter stretching around to the front tyres. The car also features new sports wheels, new wing mirror caps and side skirts.

The most prominent change at the back of the concept compared to previous prototypes with it featuring a futuristic taillights design stretching along the massive rear wing. Additionally, the car features widened wheel arches up front and at the rear as well as an aggressive rear diffuser and quad exhaust pipes.

Of course, the most crucial aspect of a hot hatch like the latest Civic Type is its powertrain. It will be powered by a brand new 2.0-litre four-cylinder VTEC turbocharged engine tuned to deliver over 280 hp. However, considering that Honda is benchmarking it against the 355 hp A 45 AMG, it is very likely that power will edge above 300 hp!

Want the Honda Civic Type R in the U.S./Canada? Sign the Petition!

Can The Power of Dreams Finally Bring the Type R to Our Shores?
by Karla Sanchez of www.motortrend.com

The Honda Civic Type R concept shown at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show appears to be the last straw for the Honda faithful. Tired of getting teased with forbidden fruit, one enthusiast took initiative and started a petition on Change.org demanding the Japanese automaker bring the racier Civic to the 'States.

Honda's slogan, after all, is "The Power of Dreams."

"Honda enthusiasts demand that the discrimination against our market stops right here. There is no excuse anymore.

If other countries can enjoy the best Honda has to offer, we should be able to enjoy the same rights," reads the petition.

As of this writing, there are 5602 signatures, but even if the petition reaches the maximum amount of signatures, what does that mean?

On the site, Honda spokesman Chris Martin commented that it's nice to see so much enthusiasm, and while he "can't promise anything," he said the company would take all the support into account.

It's no wonder Honda fans are so riled up over the Type R. Much of the car's aggressive styling comes from the Civic World Touring Car Championship race car, which, incidentally, won said championship last year.

The concept wore functional aerodynamic aids all around, and its handling is said to be influenced by the race car as well.  Underneath the hood is Honda's new 2.0-liter VTEC Turbo engine, which we were able to sample in the Type R prototype last year. We called it a riot, and enjoyed the "275 + hp" it had to offer.

Honda hopes the Type R will set a new Nürburgring front-wheel drive lap record. Will the power of dreams be enough to bring the Civic Type R to the States? Only time will tell.

2015 Honda Civic Type R Concept Revealed In Geneva: Video By Viknesh Vijayenthiran

By Viknesh Vijayenthiran

Honda’s latest Civic Type R is nearing the end of its gestation, and at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show today we got our first definitive look at the completed car in the form of a thinly veiled concept version. The aggressively-styled Civic Type R concept is said to point to the styling direction for the production version that will go on sale overseas in early 2015, and takes inspiration from Honda’s Civic race car that competes in the World Touring Car Championship.

Interestingly, the design shows some new elements not seen on the regular Civic or the prototype versions of the Civic Type R we’ve been spying for the past year. The design is heavily linked to performance, with many of the elements offering real performance benefits, as confirmed by testing at the Nürburgring race track in Germany.

The shape and angle of the stand-out rear spoiler, for example, has been designed to provide additional downforce. Additionally, the upper and lower front grilles have been enlarged and air outlets on the hood provide cooling for the engine. The front and rear fenders have been widened to accommodate 20-inch tires, and air outlets are integrated to optimize airflow.

We recently drove a prototype, complete with Honda’s new direct-injected and turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, and found it to be absolutely brilliant. The engine also comes with Honda’s VTEC variable valve timing and should deliver at least 280 horsepower in production form.

The engine will be paired with a six-speed manual transmission and spin the front wheels. It’s not clear at this point if an automatic will be offered.

Unfortunately, the latest Civic Type R, like its predecessor, won’t be offered in the U.S. as it is based on the Civic platform designed for the rest of the world. The good news is that we may see some of the car's hardware in the next-generation CR-Z.

First peek: Honda's Type R Concept

Honda has released a sketch of its new Civic Type R Concept, which likely gives us our closest indication of how the production model will look when it hits the scene in 2015.

The design team that created this Type R unashamedly dubs it a "racing car for the road" and it has some interesting design touches, like those taillights integrated into the large rear spoiler.

Thanks to a media track event hosted by Honda last year, we already have most of the low-down on what to expect beneath the bonnet of the new Type R.

Following the move already made by its peers, the hot hatch will adopt turbocharging, while retaining its 2-litre engine capacity.

While not as high-revving as the 8000rpm normally aspirated screamer that came before it, the new engine redlines at a respectable 7000rpm and makes massive power.

According to Honda, the prototype pushes 208kW and 400Nm through the front wheels, but engineers are hoping to squeeze even more out of the production model.

Jesse Adams, of our sister publication Star Motoring, drove the Prototype in Japan last year - CLICK HERE to see what he thought of it.

Will the 2015 Honda Civic Type R Spawn the Next Generation Honda CRZ?

by  Viknesh Vijayenthiran of www.motorauthority.com

Honda is hard at work developing a new hot hatch with 276 horsepower derived from a turbocharged 2.0-liter four and directed to the front wheels only. The car is the latest version of the Civic Type R that the rest of the world enjoys, but as with the previous generation the new one will be skipping the U.S. market.

Part of the reason is due to our Civic being different to the one sold elsewhere. Furthermore, the Civic is seen as an econo car over here so Honda may be reluctant to launch a Civic-based model as its performance flagship locally.

But the U.S. is still Honda’s biggest market and the automaker will need some sportier models if it wants to rebuild its faded performance image and lure back buyers that may have opted for top models like the Ford Focus ST, Mazdaspeed 3, Volkswagen GTI and Scion FR-S/Subaru BRZ twins.

That’s where a redesigned CR-Z, sharing a platform with the Civic Type R, fits in.

A source has revealed to Car Sales that Honda is keen to launch a redesigned CR-Z based on the bones of its 276-horsepower Civic Type R, should a second-generation CR-Z be approved for production. In fact, a prototype is alleged to have already been built.

The prototype version is said to feature a direct-injected and turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with the current CR-Z’s Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) hybrid system. A seven-speed dual-clutch transmission is also said to have replaced both the CVT and manual options of the current CR-Z. Peak output of this prototype is said to be around 221 horsepower, a significant leap over the current car’s paltry 130-horsepower rating.

Should production be approved, the car could be on sale within two years. Stay tuned for an update.

2015 Honda Civic Type R rendered

Confirmed with at least 280 HP

ATC Design has come up with a virtual styling for the highly anticipated 2015 Honda Civic Type R.
As you would imagine, the hot Civic hatchback was envisioned with a more aggressive body kit and a lowered suspension arrangement. It comes with large glossy black multi-spoke alloys, four tailpipes and has received a large wing at the back.

Powering the 2015 Civic Type R will be a 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine which will provide a minimum of 280 HP (206 kW) sent to the front axle. Honda has big plans for the new Civic Type R as they want it to establish a new record on the Nürburgring for a front-wheel drive car.

The current record was set in 2011 by the Renault Megane RS Trophy which lapped the circuit in 8 minutes and 7.97 seconds. Honda Europe's president Manabu Nishimae mentioned during Frankfurt Motor Show last week they tested a prototype and was close to taking down the official record.

Honda confirms 2.0-liter turbo Civic Type-R with at least 280 HP

Due in 2015

As promised, Honda has released more details about the highly anticipated Civic Type-R which will be launched sometime in 2015. Its heart and soul will be a direct-injection, turbocharged 2.0-liter gasoline engine which will produce at least 280 HP (206 kW).

Other details are limited at this moment but judging from the attached official pics and video we notice the range-topping Civic will have a quad exhaust setup and a rear wing. It also seems to be lower than the regular model and rides on larger alloys. Other upgrades will probably be in the steering and braking departments, together with an uprated gearbox and revised looks.

With two years of development still to go, Honda will pull out all the stops to make the new Civic Type R the fastest front-wheel drive car around the Nürburgring. Honda Europe president Manabu Nishimae said testing has already begun and the car was close to taking down the record. The objective is to beat the 8m 7.97s time achieved back in 2011 by the Renault Megane RS Trophy.

Autoevolution: First Video of 300 HP Honda Civic Type R [Video]

Thanks to the guys at TouriClips, we have yet another insightful and cool video from the Nurburgring Nordschleife.

This is the very first clip of the brand new, super hot, very exciting, awesomely cool, exciting as fudge Honda Civic Type R.

The new one is supposedly going to be a monster, as company bosses have allowed the minions who make the engine to push it all the way to 300 horsepower.

Other reports suggest this uber-hatch will have rear wheel steering, just like the Porsche 911 Turbo.

As you can see from this video, there's nothing understated about the new Type R. It's massively flared wheel arches.
