Mazda Motor Corp. is recalling 52,000 2009-10 Mazda6 vehicles over concerns the fuel tank could crack and leak — because of spider webs.
The highly unusual recall covers vehicles built at the Auto Alliance plant in Flat Rock between April 2008 and February 2010.
Mazda told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that "a certain type of spider may weave a web in the evaporative canister vent line."
That could lead to pressure in the emission control system that could stress the fuel tank and lead to a crack.
Mazda said it found a spider web when it reviewed a complaint in October 2009. The company will include a "spring to prohibit spider intrusion" and the computer will be reprogrammed to prevent a build-up of pressure in the emission control system.
Mazda will begin notifying owners March 14.

A month or so after buying my new Honda CRV in 2010, two spiders were crawling around my dashboard and windshield. They were orange/yellowish and looked a lot like the ones they showed for the Mazda recall. Has anyone else with CRV's found spiders in their car? Could it be the same problem as Mazda?

I can also confirm a spider infestation in my 2009 CR-V. We had literally dozens of spiders last summer in and around our call. After hearing about the Mazda recall and Accord problems, I took it into the dealer. The dealer could not find a problem. The EVAP System (where the spiders apparently lived) differs on the CR-V from the Accord. We haven't had spiders since the weather cooled off, but I'm expecting more coming when spring finally comes.
