Herbie Goes to Spain with a Special Edition Version of New Volkswagen Beetle

Special or limited editions are a speedy and cost efficient way for automakers to create some marketing buzz around one of their models and increase sales.

More often than not, all it takes is a few cosmetic touches and added equipment features, and presto; your special edition is served.

One such example is the new Volkswagen Beetle Edition 53, a special edition model made exclusively for Spain that pays tribute to Walt Disney Pictures' "Herbie" character, which first appeared on film in 1968 with "The Love Bug" that spawned several sequels over the years.

VW's real life Herbie gets a white paint job accentuated by red and blue stripes on the doors, the hood and the rear tailgate along with the number "53" on the bonnet and the "Escarabajo" (Spanish for Beetle) logo on the tailgate.

Additional standard features include Park Pilot parking assist sensor, a tire pressure monitor and 17-inch wheels.

Customers in Spain can choose from four powertrain options ranging from the 105PS 1.2-liter TSI petrol to the 140PS 2.0-liter TDI linked to a 6-speed DSG transmission, with prices starting from €22,090 (US$28,400).

Civic-Passat-Caravan Buyers Shake Off Consumer Reports

By Craig Trudell

Liz Doll, a real estate agent in Connecticut, had little interest in the highly rated Hyundai Elantra when shopping for a new car this year. She instead went with a Volkswagen Passat (PSAT) that has drawn mixed reviews.
“The handles on the Hyundai felt cheesy and cheap,” said Doll, a 37-year-old mother of three. “Everything you touched felt like it was going to fall off. I didn’t have that experience with the Passat.”
Models such as Volkswagen AG (VOW)’s Passat and Honda Motor Co.’s Civic, which lost Consumer Reports’ coveted recommended status in August 2011, are among some of the biggest gainers in the U.S. auto market this year. The disconnect shows that buyers can be more forgiving in showrooms than testers are in labs as industrywide quality gains bring automakers closer to parity.
“The overall competitive set from all manufacturers has become so good that, for some of us so-called experts in the industry, perhaps our expectations have gotten almost impossible to reach,” Alec Gutierrez, an analyst for researcher Kelley Blue Book in Irvine, California, said in a telephone interview.
Increased demand for models such as Passat and Civic probably helped spur a 12 percent increase in U.S. deliveries of cars and light trucks last month, the average estimate of nine analysts surveyed by Bloomberg. That gain would keep the industry near September’s rate, the fastest U.S. sales pace in 4 1/2 years.

Preceding Sandy

Most analysts issued their sales estimates before Hurricane Sandy slammed major auto markets including New York, Washington and Philadelphia. The storm, which churned through an area that generates about 25 percent of U.S. auto sales, disrupted dealers at the month’s end, when car buying tends to accelerate.
Deliveries of Volkswagen’s Passat have soared to 83,662 this year through September, from just 4,893 a year earlier, according to Autodata Corp. The Wolfsburg, Germany-based automaker surpassed its previous annual sales record for Passat in less than nine months, according to a Sept. 18 statement.
Volkswagen, which is targeting more than 500,000 vehicle sales in the U.S. this year, may have joined Toyota Motor Corp. (7203) in posting the biggest sales increase in October from a year earlier. Combined Volkswagen and Audi brand deliveries probably climbed 26 percent, the average of four analysts’ estimates. Toyota may match that gain, according to the average of eight estimates.

Industry Pace

U.S. light-vehicle deliveries probably rose 12 percent in October to 1.15 million, according to the nine analysts surveyed by Bloomberg. The annualized industry sales rate, which is adjusted for seasonality, may accelerate to 14.8 million, the average estimate of 16 analysts.
The industry sales pace was 13.3 million in October 2011 and 14.9 million in September, the best since March 2008, according to researcher Autodata in Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey.
Consumer Reports said the Passat “lost some of the sharpness of its predecessors” in its initial review of the model for the Yonkers, New York-based magazine’s October 2011 issue.
“The last-generation Passat was a better car overall, with agile handling” and a “well-finished interior,” Consumer Reports said after complete testing in a Dec. 28 post on its website. “But a high price and so-so reliability, plus a lack of marketing, kept it off the radar for many buyers.”
In addition to pricing and marketing, consumers also will snap up models with average or below-average reviews because of loyalty and perceptions of quality that are slow to budge, Kelley Blue Book’s Gutierrez said.

Civic Criticism

The Civic, which Consumer Reports said in August 2011 felt like an “insubstantial” ride, with long stopping distances and loud road noise, has been the sixth best-selling vehicle in the U.S. this year.
“Civic got hammered last year when that 2012 redesign was first unveiled: cheaper interior, less-quality materials, de- contented on the entry-level trims, not enough of a step forward to compete,” Gutierrez said.
Despite the criticisms, Civic deliveries surged 40 percent through September to 234,029. The model is on pace to retake the compact car segment lead this year after dropping to No. 3 behind Toyota’s Corolla and General Motors Co. (GM)’s Cruze in 2011.
The sales gain for Tokyo-based Honda in October may trail only Volkswagen’s and Toyota’s. The average estimate of eight analysts is for a 16 percent increase. Honda and Toyota City, Japan-based Toyota both are rebounding from last year’s supply shortages caused by a tsunami in their home country.

‘No Headaches’

“Honda still delivered a sedan that’s going to leave consumers with little to no headaches whatsoever,” Gutierrez said. “It just gets the job done. Honda and Toyota buyers especially are fierce brand loyalists and that’s just what they stick with.”
Chrysler Group LLC, which has steadily gained U.S. market share since 2010, has made quality gains and yet many of its brands and models remain below average in tests and surveys by the likes of Consumer Reports and J.D. Power & Associates.
The automaker majority-owned by Fiat SpA (F) may have boosted sales in October by 15 percent, the average estimate of 11 analysts, to extend its streak of monthly increases from a year earlier to 31 consecutive months.
Chrysler claimed four of the 10 worst-performing brands in Consumer Reports’ annual reliability survey, which was released this week. The magazine, which boosts its own objectivity by buying every vehicle it tests and forgoing advertising, has praised redesigned models such as the Chrysler 300 sedan and Jeep Grand Cherokee sport-utility vehicle.

Minivan Split

Chrysler’s Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country minivans illustrate some of the ways the automaker has managed to outpace other automakers’ sales gains as it continues to overhaul its lineup.
The two vans, which rank No. 1 and No. 3 in the U.S. minivan segment, respectively, are cheaper than the second- ranked Toyota Sienna and Honda’s Odyssey, and the U.S. models are offered with warranties of as much as five years and 100,000 miles (161,000 kilometers).
Minivans are subject to “one-size-fits all” evaluations by testers such as Consumer Reports that can hurt their scores, Doug Betts, the global quality chief for Chrysler and Turin, Italy-based Fiat, said in an interview.
“The No. 1 reason people buy our minivans is because of those stow-and-go seats, for their flexibility and the utility,” said Betts, who pointed to the feature as a reason the models get dinged for poor seat comfort. The minivans also perform poorly on a slalom track, which is unlikely to matter to buyers in the segment, he said.

New Reality

In criticizing Honda for its disappointing Civic redesign, Consumer Reports said in an August 2011 post on its website that the automaker is under pressure because “old assumptions are becoming blurred.” Automakers such as Ford Motor Co. (F), Hyundai Motor Co. (005380) and Kia Motors Corp. (000270) are now making better cars.
“A Ford Fusion is more reliable than the Accord, not to mention quieter and nicer to drive,” a tester for the magazine wrote in the post titled, “Honda redesigns: Is the automaker resting on its laurels?” “Hyundai and Kia are building fuel- efficient and well-equipped cars at aggressive prices, and they often drive like Hondas used to.”
Ford, which has struggled with nagging problems plaguing its electronics systems, may report a 3.2 percent increase in October U.S. sales, the average of 11 estimates. The Dearborn, Michigan-based automaker’s brands dropped in Consumer Reports’ reliability and J.D. Power’s Initial Quality Study surveys this year in part because of its MyFord Touch and MyLincoln Touch control systems.

Buyer’s Regret

Doll, the Connecticut real estate agent who bought the Volkswagen Passat, said she was motivated to buy a new car because of poor fuel economy with her 2007 Honda Pilot. While she is happy with features she didn’t have previously such as a Bluetooth wireless technology and navigation, she regrets not waiting for Ford to begin selling its C-Max hybrid that gets 47 mpg.
“Buyer’s remorse has really kicked in,” she said. “If I had just waited a month, I probably would have bought the C-Max. Now I’m like, maybe I’ll trade in the Passat next year. Maybe I’ll be one of those new-car people.”
GM, whose Cadillac line led gains by all four of the Detroit-based automaker’s brands in Consumer Reports’ reliability survey, probably boosted sales by 7.8 percent in October, the average of 11 estimates.
Sales for Nissan Motor Co., the only Japanese automaker to have below-average reliability in the Consumer Reports survey, may have risen 4.6 percent in October, the average of eight estimates. Models such as the Versa small car and Armada were drags on Yokohama, Japan-based Nissan.
South Korea’s Hyundai and Kia, which are both based in Seoul, may combine to sell 13 percent more vehicles in October than a year earlier, the average of six analysts’ estimates.
The following table shows estimates for car and light-truck sales in the U.S. Estimates for companies are a percentage change from October 2011. Forecasts for the seasonally adjusted annualized rate, or SAAR, are in millions of light vehicles.
October had 26 selling days, the same as the year-earlier period.

Windows Do Not Automatically Lower Under Water, Honda Says

Interesting, I did not know this....
Honda said on Thursday that news reports claiming that the power windows on its vehicles automatically opened during the storm, flooding the cars, were not true.

The reports said sensors that detected when a car was submerged were the culprit.

But Honda vehicles do not have a feature that rolls down the windows if the vehicle is under water, Chris Martin, a spokesman for American Honda, wrote in an e-mail.

It was widely reported that some Honda owners went to check on their vehicles and found that the power windows had lowered, and as a result the vehicles were full of water.

A report by The Associated Press on Tuesday said, “Reggie Thomas, a maintenance supervisor at a prison near the overflowing Hudson River, emerged from an overnight shift, a toothbrush in his front pocket, to find his Honda with its windows down and a foot of water inside. The windows automatically go down when the car is submerged to free drivers.”

This is not true, Mr. Martin wrote.

“There is no automatic function to lower the windows when a car is submerged,” he wrote. “But the Honda window switch spec for many years has required that our power window switches will operate to open the window even when the car is submerged. Thus, someone could still open the window as normal” if that someone was still in the car, and conscious, after it had become submerged.

He added, “That applied to all Honda and Acura models sold in at least the last 10 years or longer.”
Mr. Martin wrote that he was unaware of such an issue being identified previously.

Karen Aldana, a spokeswoman for the federal Transportation Department, said such an occurrence would be outside the government’s purview because problems like “leaks” are a “consumer satisfaction issue,” not a vehicle safety issue.

Honda Starts Selling Retro N-One Microcar in Japan

Hmmm, I think that this would sell here in North America....
Written by: Donny Nordlicht of http://rumors.automobilemag.com

Cute and stylish aren’t often words associated with Honda’s current lineup, even overseas. However, Honda has rolled out this new retro-inspired, chic hatchback called the N-One.

The underpinnings come from the aptly-named Honda N BOX and N BOX + kei cars currently on sale in Japan. All Honda N models use a CVT to power either the front or all four wheels, and the N-ONE is powered by a 660cc engine with or without a turbocharger. Pricing begins at ¥1,150,000 ($14,375) for the base N-One G with front-wheel drive and the naturally-aspirated engine. Honda also gives customers the option to step up the N-One Premium for ¥1,360,000 ($16,997), which adds upgraded interior materials and more exterior brightwork.

But the big deal about the N-ONE is its style. Despite being a micro car, it has maxi styling. The design was inspired by the 1967 N360, Honda’s first mass-produced minicar. The N-ONE has a modern update of the cheery front fascia, with circular headlights that stick up from the rectangular grille like Mickey Mouse ears. In lieu of multiple chrome bars, the headlight and grille surround is done here in black, with a body-color strip separating the upper and lower grilles. The entire car is slab-sided and very upright – like the original – and the small, mid-mounted taillights echo those from the N360. Inside, the dash is a more-rounded version of the dramatically vertical setup in the N BOX on which the N-One is based; a large infotainment screen sits in the middle of the dashboard, while a pod with the shifter, audio, and climate controls juts out in the middle of the cabin. Modern touches like LED interior and exterior lighting, xenon headlights, and a two-tone paint job are all available.

Sadly, the five-door N-One will never make it to the States. Not only is it right-hand drive only, at just around 133.3 inches long, the N-One is shorter than the Fiat 500 by a full three inches. To better utilize the limited interior space, Honda has fitted the fold-flat Magic Seat system out of the Fit in the N-ONE, which is made possible by placing the gas tank near the center of the car.

Do you think the N-One would make a good competitor for the Fiat 500? Should Honda still pursue quirky, fun niche vehicles for the North American market? Let us know what you think in the comments.

Spied! 2013 Honda Civic Revealed with Accord-Like Front Styling

The redesigned 2012 Honda Civic didn’t get the critical reaction Honda sought, and now we’ve got shots of a refreshed Civic sedan testing. Likely debuting as a 2013 model, the face-lifted Honda Civic is clearly showing influence by the 2013 Accord, which has received a much more positive response than the Civic did last year.

The 2013 Honda Civic prototype has reimagined front styling, with a grille sporting the same U-shaped trim piece we’ve seen on the 2013 Honda Accord. The 2013 Civic integrates a new lower front fascia design and, at least on the higher-trim Civics, we wouldn’t be surprised to see LED daytime running lights.

From behind, a revised taillight design is visible, though the 2013 Civic appears to use the same taillight housing shape as before. The license plate surrounding area has been expanded and the built-in rear spoiler look remains.

The two-tier instrument cluster displays — introduced on the 2006 Honda Civic, our 2006 Car of the Year — remains on what we believe is the 2013 Honda Civic, which may have upgraded interior materials. Whether Honda still has any development money to improve the car’s powertrains is unclear, but the compact already offers a number of different choices, from the regular gas-powered I-4 to a hybrid, plus a natural gas and higher-powered sporty variant.

Revisit WOT’s thoughts about how Honda should improve the Civic here, and reread our 2012 Honda Civic EX First Test here.

Proton-Honda tie-up: A drive in the right direction

The collaboration agreement between Proton Holdings Bhd and Honda
Motor Co Ltd Japan announced on Monday came as a surprise with
many analysts saying the news was not expected that soon.

However, research houses are positive that the agreement will be advantageous to the national carmaker given Honda’s superiority in hi-tech engines.

This tie-up, said RHB Research, could give Proton access to drivetrain and platform technology at a possibly lower cost given its absence of economies of scale.

“Honda is an acknowledged leader in hi-tech engines with numerous products spanning across many segments,” it said.

Noting that it is a positive direction for Proton, the research house, however, said the choice of the national carmaker’s partner was not anticipated and the timing, sooner than expected.

RHB Research added that the maiden collaborative product could be a Perdana replacement model.

It expects the tie-up possibly allowing Honda to utilise Proton’s under-utilised Tanjung Malim plant in Perak, as a means of mitigating its risks by spreading out production capacity over multiple locations.

Honda has an assembly plant in Pegoh, Malacca, and a major facility in Ayutthaya, Thailand.

RHB Research also said that Monday’s announcement would in the next few months be followed by other plans such as rationalising Proton’s sales and servicing network to eliminate overlaps between Edaran Otomobil Nasional and Proton Edar.

It reiterated its “outperform” call on DRBHICOM, Proton’s owner, at a fair value of RM3.60.

“We believe DRB-HICOM has multi-year growth potential with significant under-valued assets. However, some degree of patience from investors will be needed to implement the new
initiatives,” it said.

Meanwhile, AmResearch has reaffirmed its “buy” rating on DRB-HICOM at RM3.80 as its fair value.

“We were surprised that Honda came into the picture as it was heavily speculated that a Volkswagen (VW) tie-up was imminent,” said AmResearch.

AmResearch said based on its discussions with Proton's management, the tie-up will not involve any Honda equity participation as the focus will be to develop a 2.0-litre car via platform-sharing.

"There is further upside as we believe that there will be similar arrangements with its other partners to produce models in different segments," AmResearch said, adding that the tie-up is set to be finalised within six months.

It also does not rule out a tie-up with VW to produce B segment cars as this will help resolve the underutilisation of the plant in Tanjung Malim.

Hong Leong Investment Bank (HLIB) also said the tie-up news was positive as this will give DRB-HICOM the chance to develop as top regional player in the growing automotive components and parts segment.

HLIB noted that Honda selected Malaysia as a regional hub after Japan and the US for manufac-turing hybrid cars by 2014 to 2015, after investing RM350 million to double its Pegoh plant's capacity to 100,000 units a year.

On Bursa Malaysia yesterday, DRB-HICOM closed one sen lower at RM2.52 with 71.02 million shares traded.

Next Gen Mazda RX-7 in 2017

Mazda will bring back the much-loved RX-7 in 2017, with less weight, less complexity and a greater emphasis on driver involvement.

Speaking to TMR at the local launch of the facelifted MX-5, Mazda Motor Corporation's sports car chief Nobuhiro Yamamoto said that the return of the RX-7 will mark 50 years since the introduction of Mazda's first rotary-engined car, the Cosmo Sport, in 1967.

By the time the next-generation model arrives, it will have been 15 years since the RX-7 departed Mazda showrooms.
