Toyota killing Scion after years of slumping sales

In this Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2014, file photo, the Scion iM concept is unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show. Toyota announced Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2016, that it is discontinuing its Scion brand, aimed at younger car buyers, after years of slumping sales. Beginning in August the MY17 Scion, the FR-S sports car, iA sedan, the iM 5-door hatchback and the C-HR will be rolled into the standard Toyota line-up. Scion owners can still visit Toyota service departments for maintenance and repairs.

Toyota is killing its youth-oriented Scion brand after learning an important lesson: Young buyers simply want Toyotas.

Scion was formed in 2003 to court Generation X buyers, who didn’t like their parents’ brands and didn’t trust traditional marketing, says Bob Carter, Toyota Motor Corp.’s senior vice-president of U.S. operations. It was known for its funky designs, like the boxy xB, and was the brand Toyota used when it wanted to experiment with new kinds of marketing, like pop-up test or no-haggle pricing.
But as those buyers matured, they started buying Toyotas.

Next came the Millennials. For a while, that generation delayed car buying because they were underemployed and had too much student debt. But when they did buy, they liked their parents’ brands and wanted Toyotas, too.

“For those buyers, frankly speaking, Toyota as a brand is more aspirational than Scion was,” Carter said. Carter said Millennials made up nearly one-third of the Toyota brand’s buyers last year.

There were other issues with Scion. The small, oddball lineup never connected with buyers and cost a bit more, since features like touchscreens that were optional on other cars came standard on Scions. Scion’s bestseller, the tC coupe, starts at $21,330, or $2,600 more than a Honda Civic. Scion also doesn’t have any SUVs, which are rapidly becoming the most popular style of vehicle in the U.S.

At the brand’s height, in 2006, Americans bought just over 173,000 Scions. In 2015, they bought 56,167. By comparison, Toyota sold more than 363,000 Corolla sedans last year.

So, beginning in August, 2017 model-year Scion vehicles will be rebadged as Toyotas. The FR-S sports car, iA sedan and iM 5-door hatchback will be a part of the Toyota line-up. So will the C-HR, a small SUV concept shown at the L.A. Auto Show that Toyota will likely make. The tC coupe will have a final release series edition and end production in August, according to Toyota.

Toyota says it achieved what it had hoped with the Scion, including attracting younger buyers. Half of the 1 million Scions sold were bought by people under 35, Carter said, and 70 per cent of those buyers were new to the Toyota family.

Katie Seals, 22, was new to the Toyota family when she bought a Scion xD subcompact about five months ago. Seals, a television reporter, lives near the beach in San Diego and wanted something easy to park. She also wanted something reliable but thought the Toyotas and Hondas she looked at were dull. And she loved the xD’s sound system.

Toyota may not keep buyers like Seals. She said she liked having something different, and would probably look around at other brands when it comes time to buy again.

Carter said the company will bring some of its experiments at Scion to its other brands. The Toyota Care maintenance program, which provides two years of free maintenance, originated with Scion, he said. Lexus is currently running a no-haggle pricing pilot borrowed from Scion, and Toyota will soon offer an express purchase program. Scion taught Toyota that consumers want transparent pricing and want to spend less time buying.

“Scion was the test bed,” Carter said.

Sarah Wall, a 39-year-old marketing and communications executive in San Francisco, said she bought a Scion xD in 2010 because of the no-haggle pricing policy. The car is distinctive, easy to park and has low maintenance costs, she said.

Wall said she’s “devastated” that Scion will no longer be a separate brand. But she says she would consider a Toyota in the future, especially if the brand adopts no-haggle pricing.

Toyota’s decision will have minimal impact on dealers and owners. Scion, which is only sold in the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico, has no stand-alone dealerships. The brand is sold through 1,004 Toyota dealerships, which will continue to service the cars.

It’s not unusual for auto makers to kill a brand or pull it out of a particular market. Ford Motor Co. killed its Mercury brand in 2010, and multiple brands, like Izusu and Renault, have left the U.S. market. But Kelley Blue Book senior analyst Karl Brauer said this is the first time a U.S.-specific brand launched by a Japanese manufacturer has been scrapped.

Brauer says Scion was a victim of the success of the Toyota brand. The Toyota Camry sedan has been the bestselling car in the U.S. for 14 years, and the brand has a full lineup that appeals to Millennials and Baby Boomers alike.

Scion’s demise doesn’t necessarily spell trouble for other small car brands, like BMW AG’s Mini or Daimler AG’s Smart, said Ivan Drury, an analyst for Edmunds.com.

Those brands differentiated themselves from their parent brands more than Scion ever did, he said.

Toyota Aims to Lift Annual U.S. Sales to Two Million Vehicles by 2013

Yep, this is to be badged a Scion?!?....
By Mike Ramsey
Of THE WALL STREET JOURNAL

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (Dow Jones)--Toyota Motor Corp. on Wednesday challenged U.S.
dealers to boost annual sales in the U.S. to two million vehicles by 2013, an
increase of 30% over its current level, according to two people briefed by the
company.

Yoshi Inaba, president of the U.S. operations, made the challenge to more
than a thousand dealers who attended a national dealer meeting, this person
said.

The automaker also showed dealers the two new versions of its Prius hybrid
that it plans to introduce in the U.S. before the end of 2012, these people
said.

The new versions include a subcompact that is smaller than the current Prius
hatchback and about the size of Toyota's Yaris subcompact, they said.

The other looks like a small sport-utility vehicle and has 50% more interior
and cargo space than the existing Prius model, the people said.

Toyota has discussed for more than a year the idea of expanding the number
hybrid models it offers under the Prius name.

After the dealer meeting, Toyota also announced in a statement that it would
make standard its free two-year, 25,0000-mile scheduled maintenance program.
The offer was started as an incentive program in March and never discontinued.
It now applies to all future sales of Toyota and Scion models.

Toyota is seeking to return to the rapid growth rate that made it the world's
largest automaker. On Tuesday, Lexus dealers were told that Toyota would offer
rebates and subsidize loans and leases on most Lexus models in a bid to help
the luxury brand secure the top sales spot among premium brands.

Lexus has been the top-selling luxury make in the U.S. for about a decade but
trails Mercedes-Benz so far this year.

Toyota has lost more than a percentage point of market share in 2010 so far,
mainly as a result of the fallout from the quality and safety crisis that
engulfed the auto maker earlier this year.

In Las Vegas, Toyota Chief Executive Akio Toyoda also told the dealers that
his number one priority was to give customers peace of mind about the products
and to enliven the brand, making the cars more fun and enjoyable to drive, the
people briefed by the company said.

Toyota promised last January that it would go forward with an expanded Prius
line, including, a plug-in version of the Prius that can go about 13 miles on
only electricity before the engine kicks on in 2012.

Toyota, which already sells more hybrids than any other automaker, recently
said it would introduce six new hybrid models in the next two years. The Prius
models build on a well-established brand that has been the market leader in
hybrids.

Mr. Toyoda told the dealers that Toyota would try to be the world leader in
building environmentally conscious vehicles and touted the company's
cooperation with Tesla Motors Inc. Toyota is building a RAV4 electric car using
Tesla battery technology, the people briefed by Toyota said.

He also thanked the Toyota dealers for sticking by the company as they dealt
with millions of repairs for recalled vehicles since last fall, due primarily
to complaints about unintended acceleration, according to the people briefed by
Toyota.

Toyota executives also told dealers they were committed to reviving the
struggling, youth-oriented Scion brand and were bringing a slate of new
products, the people said.

The new Scion models include a production version of its FT-86 concept car as
well as the already-announced Scion iQ subcompact, the people said.

Toyota is one of the few automakers to offer free maintenance on its
vehicles. The incentive was launched in March as Toyota was seeking to regain
the trust of American buyers.

Toyota briefly stopped selling eight of its most popular models in February
to fix a sticky accelerator pedal. Toyota also was in the midst of recalling
millions of vehicles for slipping floor mats that could entrap accelerator
pedals.

Scion announces September 2010 arrival in Canada

(TORONTO) – Announced at a luncheon in St. Catharine’s today, SCION the automotive brand that maximizes personal expression will bust the performance and style conventions when it arrives at 45 SCION Dealers in Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver in September, 2010.

At a Toyota dealer meeting in 2008, it was announced that SCION would be coming to Canada. Dealers were very excited about the possibility of adding SCION to their showrooms. All the while, Canadian enthusiasts were able to get a taste of the new brand with interactive concept vehicle displays and give-aways at auto shows in Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver.

“This is a great time to launch SCION in Canada,” said Larry Hutchinson, Director of SCION in Canada. “As the auto industry emerges from recession, one of the largest and youngest demographics will be entering the marketplace. Young buyers will be looking to the ever-growing small car market. They are not only looking for a safe, high-quality and fuel efficient vehicle, it is important to them that the vehicle reflects their personality and lifestyle, and the stylish and trendy SCION brand will be there to fulfill that need.”

Built upon a “store within a store” format the initial 45 dealers for Canada include 18 in Montreal, 20 in Toronto and 7 in Vancouver. These dealers were chosen for both their location and the ability to address and anticipate the needs of the growing youth market. Dealer locations are centred in and around urban areas with above average youth populations.

Each dealer is already redefining their style to prepare for SCION entering their showrooms.

“The next generation of young car buyers is carving its own unique social and cultural experiences, and SCION dealers will be part of their lifestyle,” Hutchinson continued. “We are very excited to announce the 45 SCION dealers for Canada are already preparing for an edgy new car lineup and a whole new demographic of drivers.”

SCION will come to Canada with three vehicles:
The SCION tC compact sport coupe combines style and fun topped with a remarkable panorama moon roof;
The SCION xD blends personality in a subcompact five-door hatchback;
The SCION xB compact five-door hatchback delivers astounding spaciousness wrapped in a cubic cladding that’s game for urban adventure.

SCION is not only fuel efficient and stylish, it is all about personalization. Upgrades and accessories can be added to any SCION, from unique wheels, to shift knobs and sport pedals to satellite radio systems and a broad selection of TRD (Toyota Racing Development) performance enhancements. Every SCION’s safety system currently includes front dual-stage airbags, front seat mounted side airbags, front and rear side curtain airbags, three-point lap and shoulder belts for all occupants.

There will be more to see and hear from SCION throughout 2010, including the introduction of the lineup throughout the 2010 auto show season and sneak peek events that target the youth demographic and trend-setters. To keep on top of what is to come on SCION, Canadians can visit www.scionnation.ca.
